As a therapist working with students with special needs, it is essential to understand the various specialists involved in providing comprehensive support. These specialists include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavioral therapists, psychologists, and others who contribute uniquely to the development and well-being of students with diverse needs. To gain insight into their roles, I explored a specific web page and a YouTube video that detail the functions and approaches of these specialists.
Web Page: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
The web page I selected is the official site of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), accessible at https://www.asha.org. This site provides comprehensive information about speech-language pathologists, their roles, and how they assist students with speech, language, and communication challenges. According to ASHA, speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. They work closely with students to develop personalized therapy plans that improve communication skills, which is vital for academic success and social interaction. One new idea I learned from this site is the importance of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, which speech therapists often recommend for students with severe speech impairments. This technology can dramatically enhance communication and participation in classroom activities, emphasizing the significance of integrating assistive technology into therapy.

The video explains how occupational therapists help students develop essential skills such as fine motor coordination, sensory processing, and daily living activities. One new idea I gained from this video is the concept of 'sensory diet,' a customized activity plan that provides sensory input tailored to a student’s needs to improve focus and self-regulation during school hours. This approach underscores the holistic nature of occupational therapy and its critical role in enabling students to access their education more fully.
Post #2: Examine the post of someone from another specialist group
In reviewing a post from an educational psychologist, I learned that this specialist primarily focuses on assessing students' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. They conduct evaluations to identify learning disabilities, emotional challenges, and behavioral issues that might affect academic performance. Based on their assessments, they develop intervention plans and recommend classroom accommodations or therapeutic interventions. In my own words, educational psychologists serve as a bridge between assessment and intervention, helping educators understand a student's unique needs and how best to support them academically and emotionally.
