In Saudi Arabia, cultural stereotypes and prejudices are deeply rooted in traditional and social norms that have persisted over time. One prevalent stereotype pertains to gender roles, where women are often perceived primarily as homemakers and caregivers, while men are viewed as breadwinners and decision-makers. This stereotype stems from longstanding cultural and religious expectations that emphasize specific gender responsibilities, which can limit women's opportunities in education and employment (Al-Lamki, 2019). Another common prejudice involves attitudes towards expatriates; there is a perception that foreign workers, especially low-skilled laborers, are less competent or are taking jobs away from Saudis. This stereotype may exist due to economic concerns and national pride, combined with media portrayals that sometimes reinforce negative views about foreign workers' impact on local employment (Alharthy, 2020). These stereotypes reinforce social divisions but are gradually challenged by increasing awareness and reform efforts aimed at promoting gender equality and national employment policies.
Having a diverse workforce offers significant advantages, including increased creativity and innovation, broader perspectives for problem-solving, and improved decision-making processes. Diversity fosters an environment where different ideas and experiences can lead to more effective solutions, especially in a globalized economy (Shore et al., 2011). Moreover, diverse teams can better serve diverse customer bases, leading to higher customer satisfaction and business success. However, there are also challenges associated with workforce diversity, such as potential communication barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and conflicts arising from differing norms and values (Richard, 2000). These issues can hinder team cohesion and productivity if not properly managed. Despite these disadvantages, research indicates that organizations that implement inclusive practices can mitigate these challenges and harness the full potential of diversity for competitive advantage (Roberson & Park, 2007). Ultimately, embracing workforce diversity is essential for organizations aiming for growth and sustainability in an interconnected world.
