Gambling in sports has become a prominent issue affecting athletes, organizations, and fans alike. The rising popularity of sports betting, especially with the advent of online platforms, has intensified concerns over its impact on the integrity of sports and athlete well-being. Two significant challenges associated with gambling in sports are match-fixing and the influence of gambling sponsorships on youth engagement. These issues raise questions about fair play and the ethics of sports marketing.

Match-fixing is a major challenge linked to gambling in sports, as it threatens the competitive integrity of athletic contests. Researchers have documented numerous cases where gambling influences players or officials to alter game outcomes for financial gain (Marina & Maher, 2018). This illicit practice not only undermines fair competition, but also erodes public trust in sporting events (Koufopoulos et al., 2020). The global scale of match-fixing networks and the difficulty in detecting such tampering amplify the challenge faced by sports governing bodies in maintaining integrity.

Gambling sponsorships and advertising have also emerged as concerning trends, particularly with their targeting of youth audiences. Sponsorship deals between gambling companies and sports teams or leagues can normalize betting behavior among impressionable fans (Hing et al., 2021). Such marketing strategies potentially lead to increased problematic gambling behaviors, especially in young athletes and fans, escalating health and social issues (Parke et al., 2018). The proliferation of these sponsorships complicates efforts to promote responsible gambling and protect vulnerable populations.

I chose to explore gambling in sport because of its pervasive influence and ongoing ethical debates within athletics. I believe this phenomenon significantly relates to issues of integrity and social responsibility in sports. Through research, I learned that addressing gambling-related challenges requires comprehensive policies, community awareness, and ethical marketing practices to safeguard the fairness of competitive sports and protect vulnerable groups.
