The process of socialization is fundamental in shaping an individual's behaviors, beliefs, values, and social skills necessary to function effectively within society. It is a lifelong process through which individuals learn and internalize the norms, customs, and ideologies of their culture, enabling social integration and cultural continuity (Grusec & Hastings, 2015). Socialization begins in early childhood and continues through various agents such as family, peers, education, media, and, increasingly, the internet. Through socialization, individuals develop a sense of self and their roles within society, which influences their interactions and life choices.

The internet has profoundly transformed the traditional socialization process, especially in recent decades. Personally, the internet has served as an influential agent of socialization by providing access to vast information, virtual communities, and social networks that transcend geographical boundaries. My own socialization has been shaped significantly by online interactions, which have helped me develop social skills, cultural awareness, and even new interests through exposure to diverse perspectives. Social media platforms facilitate ongoing communication, allowing me to maintain relationships and participate in online communities that reinforce social norms and cultural values. However, this digital influence also comes with challenges, such as exposure to misinformation or cyberbullying, which can impact social development negatively (Subrahmanyam & Smahel, 2011).

The 'digital divide' refers to the gap between individuals and communities that have access to modern information and communication technologies, particularly the internet, and those who do not. This divide is often rooted in socioeconomic, geographical, racial, or educational disparities. Lack of internet access can severely limit individuals' opportunities for social inclusion, educational achievement, and access to information, which are vital for personal and community development (van Dijk, 2020). For children, not having internet access can hinder their ability to engage in remote learning and develop digital literacy, vital skills in today's digital economy. Adolescents without internet access may experience social exclusion from peer groups that heavily utilize social media for communication and identity formation. For adults, limited connectivity can restrict job opportunities, access to social services, and participation in civic engagement.

The concept of socialization links closely to the digital divide as it highlights the inequality in access to social tools and resources essential for social development. In the context of the issue I explored in Week 1, which revolved around educational disparities, socialization played a key role. Students with internet access can participate fully in online learning environments, interact with teachers and peers, and access educational resources that foster their social and academic growth. Conversely, students without reliable internet are marginalized from these opportunities, which hampers their social integration and academic progress. This digital gap not only perpetuates existing social inequalities but also influences individuals' social identities and their engagement with society at large (Kozleski et al., 2021). Therefore, the process of socialization, mediated through access or lack thereof to digital technologies, significantly impacts social mobility and cohesion.
