Do you speak differently to friends than you do to your children? If you have to call an insurance company, do you speak differently to the agent on the phone than to your grandmother?

The way I speak to a close friend differs significantly from how I communicate with my supervisor or an authority figure. For example, when I talk to my friends, I use informal language, slang, and a relaxed tone. Our conversations are casual, filled with humor, and often include personal anecdotes. This relaxed approach helps foster a sense of camaraderie and reinforces our friendship. In contrast, when I speak to my supervisor at work, I adopt a formal and professional tone. I choose my words carefully, avoid slang, and focus on clarity and professionalism, especially when discussing work-related topics or providing updates on projects. This difference in approach ensures respect for formal boundaries and professionalism, which is essential in a workplace setting.
Another example involves interactions with family members, such as my grandmother.
