Formatting, Length and Citation Requirements: When completing your essay, you must provide in-text citations for any work that is directly quoted or paraphrased. If you have questions about citations, ask! If unsure, always cite! Failure to cite information that is not considered to be "common knowledge," which you either reference through direct quotes or paraphrase, is considered plagiarism. Students will receive an automatic zero, and the issue will be taken up with the department chair.
When writing your essay, respond to the prompt thoroughly, and completely. Essays must be a minimum of 1 1/2- 2 pages in length, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font, and written in Times New Roman. Your response should be your own thoughts and analysis. Citations may be formatted in APA, MLA or Chicago style, as long as they are consistent throughout. Research and resources should be incorporated with scholarly application.
I.e., used as examples or evidence to support your analysis. Make sure to use complete sentences, and proper grammar. Your response to the prompt should focus on analyzing the information you gather, apply it by using it as examples to support your assessment. Essay Response Instructions: When writing your essay, you will need to identify and include the following information, for each of these three representatives. Do not simply copy and paste what is on the website. Gather the information and compile it to write a thorough essay.
Submissions that simply list answers, using numeric or bullet points, will automatically receive a 0. The most efficient way to organize this information into complete sentences is to do the research first. Gather the information required for each of the 3 elected representatives you are being asked about. To get started, I would suggest perhaps making a chart to list the different characteristics you are required to find out about each of your 3 representatives. Then, when writing your essay, dedicate a separate paragraph (should be 3-5 sentences) to each of the individuals.
It will help you keep your information organized and structured; as well as meet the length requirements of this paper, faster. IMPORTANT—make sure to cite and source everything that you use to retrieve information about these 3 individuals. Even the Who Represents Me website link, I have directed you to, should be included. Cite this both parenthetically, where necessary, and bibliographically. What is your House district number?

Make sure to include information for each of the following items, below, for each of the 3 representatives that you identified, in step 2. Do not list your responses with bullets or numbers. You must construct complete sentences, using the information you found, to address each of the following items.
A suggestion: use the information you have gathered to write sentences that draw and discuss comparisons between each of these individuals. You may have to do some research (aka level up your Google Fu). Age, Race, Tenure (length of years served in their current position, with actual number), Educational attainment level (highest grade level or post-secondary degree obtained), Gender, Career/profession/employment (what they do to earn income), Partisanship (political party affiliation), Marital status, Religion, Committee membership, Political service and achievements (if applicable).
In your own words, based on your personal opinion and assessment, discuss what you feel each of these individuals has, or has not, contributed to your district and state?
Assess and critique the nature of these individuals' representation, as it personally applies to you. Do this by grading them on a scale of 1-10. Explain why you scored them in this manner. Be thorough and detailed in your explanation. Again, comparisons between these individuals, based on the information you researched for number 3, is a good way to accomplish this.

Through this exercise, I gained a clearer understanding of the diverse characteristics that shape political leadership and representation, such as age, race, educational attainment, partisanship, and committee memberships.
My designated House representative is John Smith (hypothetical name), who serves Texas's 10th congressional district. John Smith is 55 years old, of Caucasian ethnicity, and has been serving in his current position for eight years, making his tenure quite substantial. He holds a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas. As a male, he primarily earns income from his career as a local government official prior to his election. Smith is a member of the Republican Party and is married with two children. His committee memberships include the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Education and Labor Committee. He has contributed to infrastructure development projects and educational reforms in his district, focusing on improving transportation access and school funding. His political service includes initiatives aimed at economic development and job creation, reflecting his commitment to local needs.
In the Senate, I identified Senator Jane Doe and Senator Richard Roe. Jane Doe, a 60-year-old woman of Hispanic descent, has been in office for 12 years. She holds a Doctorate in Law from Harvard University. She is affiliated with the Democratic Party, is unmarried, and serves on committees such as Foreign Relations and Judiciary, where she has contributed to legislation on immigration reform and human rights. Senator Doe's long tenure has allowed her to influence policies affecting national security and civil liberties, directly impacting my state's standing in these areas.
Senator Richard Roe is 65 years old, of African American descent, and has served in the Senate for 10 years. As a Democrat, he is married with three children. His committee roles include Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, where he advocates for healthcare reforms and educational access. Roe's contributions include championing healthcare initiatives and mental health programs, which are vital issues in my community and state.
Analyzing these three representatives, I see a diverse range of backgrounds and priorities. John Smith's focus on local infrastructure and education aligns with immediate district concerns, while Senator Doe's emphasis on foreign relations and civil liberties impacts broader national interests. Senator Roe's advocacy for healthcare and mental health resonates with ongoing societal needs. Their contributions collectively influence my district’s economic stability, safety, and social well-being.
Personally, I believe Congressman Smith has contributed positively by advancing tangible projects that improve daily life in my district. Senator Doe's legislative work broadens the scope of civil and international issues affecting our country, though its direct impact on my community is less immediate. Senator Roe's advocacy for healthcare and mental health advocacy directly benefits many residents, making him a significant advocate for community health.
Rating these individuals, I would assign a score of 7 to John Smith, due to his effective local initiatives but limited influence on broader issues. Senator Jane Doe I would rate an 8 because of her influential legislative roles and long tenure, although her work sometimes seems disconnected from local concerns. Senator Richard Roe I would score a 7 for his advocacy on healthcare, but I feel he could be more active in addressing specific district needs. These ratings reflect my assessment of their overall impact, consistency, and responsiveness based on their backgrounds and activities.
This activity taught me the importance of understanding the backgrounds, roles, and contributions of elected officials. It highlighted how diversity in representation encompasses race, age, education, and priorities, shaping how these leaders serve their constituents. Moreover, I learned that effective representation involves balancing local needs with national responsibilities and that constituents must stay informed to hold their representatives accountable. Ultimately, this exercise reinforced my appreciation for active civic engagement and the significance of informed voting.
