The project aims to integrate pharmacological knowledge, diagnostic reasoning, patient assessment, nursing diagnoses, and care planning principles, culminating in a detailed, APA-formatted document.

Part 1 (Due Week 5): Medication and Diagnostic Test Summaries

In the initial phase, students are tasked with selecting five primary medications pertinent to their assigned case study patient. They must compile detailed information for each medication, including drug names, dosages, routes, frequencies, pharmacological classes, expected actions, the medical diagnoses these medications address, their side effects, adverse reactions, interactions, and nursing administration instructions. Additionally, students will select five relevant labs or diagnostic tests, documenting normal values, expected abnormal findings, and clinical implications. This part emphasizes thoroughness, clinical relevance, and APA formatting, including a title page and references.

Part 2 (Due Week 7): Health Assessment and Nursing Diagnoses

The second component requires students to research and describe the patient's primary (admitting) diagnosis, along with four secondary diagnoses. Each diagnosis must be explained in at least five sentences, outlining the pathophysiology supported by credible sources. Following this, a detailed head-to-toe physical assessment and patient interview are to be documented, tailored to the patient's health status and case context. Lastly, students will identify and correctly format five priority nursing diagnoses (NANDA), with proper reasoning and clinical judgment, which will be used for subsequent care planning.

Part 3 (Due Week 10): Comprehensive Care Plan Development

The final submission involves creating an individualized comprehensive plan of care based on prior analyses. This plan must include safety considerations, cultural and spiritual factors, and interventions aimed at health promotion and restoration. For each nursing diagnosis, students will set SMART outcomes (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound), and develop at least four nursing interventions prioritized via Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. A detailed teaching plan, evaluation strategies, and reflection on plan prioritization and expected short-term outcomes are essential. It is expected that students critically analyze which diagnoses are highest priority and suggest adjustments to improve patient outcomes during shifts.

Additional Requirements and Evaluation

Throughout all parts, APA formatting is mandatory, including a title page, in-text citations, and a reference list. The project is collaborative; individual submissions are not accepted, and communication within groups is essential. The instructor reserves the right to deduct points for formatting errors, incomplete sections, or lack of collaboration. The project culminates in a clinical group presentation, where students will deliver a concise, well-organized 10-15 minute teaching session on a designated topic, incorporating learning objectives, visual aides, and relating content to nursing practice.
