Globalization has profoundly influenced the landscape of labor unions in the United States, bringing both opportunities and challenges. Primarily, globalization facilitates the expansion of markets and access to new labor pools, which can benefit unions through increased job opportunities and economic growth. However, it also introduces significant pressures that can undermine union strength and influence. One of the most critical negative impacts is the offshoring of jobs to countries with cheaper labor costs, which directly leads to job losses and weakens union bargaining power domestically (Shin & Orazem, 2020).
Moreover, globalization encourages a competitive environment where multinational corporations seek to minimize costs, often at the expense of workers' rights and benefits. This pressure can result in the erosion of established labor standards, as companies threaten to relocate operations if unions push for better wages or working conditions.
