Leadership is a fundamental component of effective nursing practice, shaping not only individual caregiver performance but also influencing team dynamics, organizational culture, and patient outcomes. As healthcare environments become more complex and demanding, it is essential for nurse leaders to evaluate and develop their leadership skills continually. This paper aims to assess my own leadership style, analyze my leadership skills based on a self-assessment, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and formulate an actionable plan to enhance my leadership capabilities.
Assessment of Leadership Style
To determine my preferred leadership style, I utilized the "Leadership Development - Test One" from The Foundation of Nursing Leadership. This self-assessment tool categorizes leadership styles, providing insight into the dominant approaches an individual employs. My results indicated that my predominant leadership style aligns with transformational leadership, characterized by inspiring and motivating team members, fostering innovation, and emphasizing collaborative goal-setting. Transformational leadership is particularly effective in nursing contexts because it encourages staff development, enhances job satisfaction, and improves patient care outcomes (Burke et al., 2019).
Analysis of Leadership Skills
Analyzing my leadership skills based on the assessment highlights several strengths. Action Plan for Leadership Development
To capitalize on my strengths, I will continue to seek opportunities for professional development, such as participating in leadership workshops and mentoring programs that reinforce transformational leadership qualities. I will actively seek feedback from colleagues and supervisors to refine my communication and motivational strategies. Moreover, I plan to engage in reflective practice by journaling leadership experiences and challenges to foster ongoing growth.

To improve conflict resolution skills, I plan to enroll in conflict management courses and practice de-escalation strategies in real-world scenarios. Monitoring progress is essential; therefore, I will set specific, measurable goals, such as successfully delegating certain responsibilities weekly, and soliciting monthly peer feedback. I will also seek mentorship from experienced nurse leaders to gain insights into best practices. These steps will help ensure continuous improvement and mastery of leadership competencies.
