Background

Access to clean water remains a significant challenge in many Macedonian communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. According to recent studies (World Health Organization, 2022), nearly 25% of water sources in these regions are contaminated with pathogens, leading to waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. The Macedonian government has made efforts to improve water infrastructure; however, resource constraints hinder widespread implementation. EWB has successfully executed similar projects in other countries, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-driven, sustainable engineering solutions (Smith & Jones, 2021). Our organization plans to introduce gravity-fed filtration systems tailored to local conditions, significantly reducing health risks associated with contaminated water.

Problem/Purpose

The core problem is the lack of affordable, sustainable access to potable water in five Macedonian towns. This deficiency exposes residents, especially children and vulnerable populations, to preventable diseases and hinders economic development. The purpose of our project is to install reliable water purification systems that will provide continuous access to clean water, improving health outcomes and fostering community resilience. We have decided to prioritize this project due to its high impact potential, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with our organizational goals.

Proposal/Plan/Schedule

Our plan involves deploying modular, low-maintenance water purification systems based on proven technologies such as ceramic filters and UV sterilization units. In collaboration with local partners, we will conduct needs assessments, procure equipment, and train community members to operate and maintain the systems. The project timeline spans four months: two months for source procurement, installation, and training; followed by two months of monitoring and evaluation. Community engagement will be integral, ensuring local ownership and sustainability. Figure 1 illustrates the project schedule, highlighting key milestones and deliverables.

Staffing

The project team will comprise experienced engineers from EWB, local technicians, and community leaders. The engineering team includes certified water treatment specialists who will oversee system design and installation. Local technicians will be trained to perform routine maintenance, fostering capacity building. The project manager will coordinate activities and liaise with stakeholders. Our organization’s prior experience in similar water projects affirms our capacity to efficiently manage project execution and ensure quality.

Budget

We estimate the total project cost at $25,000, covering equipment procurement ($15,000), transportation and logistics ($3,000), training and community engagement ($4,000), and monitoring ($3,000). Equipment costs are based on quotes from reputable manufacturers of ceramic filters and UV sterilizers (CleanWater Corp., 2023; EcoFilter Ltd., 2023). Cost-control measures include bulk purchasing and volunteer labor, which we expect will reduce expenses significantly. A detailed budget breakdown is provided in Table 1.
