The different policies regarding health play a role in our professional development. Politics will also impact professional practice in different manners. The Nurse practitioner curriculum development, it is based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing essential.

The essentials serve as a framework for curriculum development and professional performance. An important example of the program essential is Essential 6: Health Policy and Advocacy: In this essential, the student will obtain knowledge of healthcare policies, the healthcare system, and the influence of those policies on professional performance. The students will also understand all the legal and Regulatory agencies for Advanced nursing practice. American Association of Colleges of Nursing. (2011). As nursing professionals continue to evolve within the complex landscape of healthcare, understanding the intricate relationship between health policy, politics, and nursing practice is crucial. This self-assessment reflection explores these themes in light of my classroom experiences, emphasizing the importance of policies and political processes in shaping professional nursing roles, especially in advanced practice settings. Furthermore, it examines the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials, particularly Essential 6: Health Policy and Advocacy, which provides a foundational framework for curriculum development and professional performance for nurse practitioners.

My journey in this course has significantly deepened my understanding of how health policies impact nursing practice. I have recognized that policies at various levels—from local hospital protocols to federal healthcare regulations—directly influence the scope and quality of care nurses can provide. For instance, legislation surrounding nurse practitioner licensure and scope of practice defines the autonomy we possess in clinical decision-making. During my coursework, I engaged in discussions about the importance of advocacy and policy development, understanding that nurses must be proactive in influencing policies that affect patient outcomes and the nursing profession itself.

The political dimension of healthcare has become vividly apparent through case studies and policy analysis assignments. These lessons illustrated how political shifts and governmental decisions can either facilitate or hinder progress in healthcare delivery. For example, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) significantly expanded access to care; however, subsequent political debates and policy changes have created ongoing challenges and opportunities for nursing advocacy. These experiences underscore the necessity of nurses engaging not only in clinical practice but also in political advocacy to influence health policy positively.

In addition, my coursework highlighted the importance of legal and regulatory agencies that govern advanced nursing practice. Organizations such as state boards of nursing, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), and federal agencies like the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) establish standards that nurses must adhere to. Understanding these agencies' roles helps us navigate the legal landscape and advocate for policies supporting expanded practice authority. Recognizing the legal and regulatory framework is fundamental for Nurse Practitioners, ensuring that we practice ethically, legally, and effectively within our scope of practice.

The AACN Essentials serve as a guiding principle in shaping nursing education to meet the demands of modern healthcare. Essential 6, specifically, emphasizes health policy and advocacy, teaching students how to influence healthcare policies actively. This essential encourages nurse practitioners to develop skills in policy analysis, advocacy, and leadership. Through coursework and self-reflection, I have learned that mastery of these areas enhances our ability to advocate for patient-centered care, improve healthcare systems, and influence policy changes that benefit society at large.

Implementing the principles of Essential 6 involves engaging with policymakers, participating in professional organizations, and staying informed about healthcare legislation. As future nurse leaders, we bear responsibility for advocating for policies that promote equitable access to quality care and uphold ethical standards. My ongoing education has reinforced that advocacy and policy understanding are integral to advancing the nurse's role in healthcare transformation.

In conclusion, my classroom experiences have broadened my perspective on how health policy and politics influence nursing practice. They have equipped me with a more comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory mechanisms that govern our profession. The AACN Essentials, particularly Essential 6, serve as a vital framework for developing competent, politically aware nurse practitioners capable of shaping healthcare policies. As I progress in my career, I am committed to applying this knowledge to advocate for policies that improve health outcomes, advance nursing practice, and ensure the delivery of equitable, high-quality care for all patients.
