In this paper, I will explore how my Bachelor of Science in Public Health has been integrated into my academic experiences and how I envision applying this knowledge in the professional field. I will detail the specific courses, discussions, and assignments where each program learning outcome (PLO) has been addressed, reflect on which outcomes have been most meaningful, and discuss my future application of the acquired knowledge.
The BS in Public Health program encompasses several key learning outcomes designed to prepare students for impactful careers in health promotion, disease prevention, policy development, and community health. These outcomes include understanding epidemiology, health behaviors, environmental health, health policy, and program planning. Throughout my coursework, I have encountered these outcomes in various contexts, which I will elaborately detail in the matrix attached to my discussion post.
Addressing Program Learning Outcomes in Courses
Each course within the program strategically aligns with specific PLOs. For example, the course "Epidemiology and Biostatistics" directly addressed the outcome related to understanding disease patterns and statistical analysis. This course provided foundational knowledge crucial for analyzing public health data and disease trends. Similarly, "Environmental Health" covered the impact of environmental factors on community health, aligning closely with the environmental health PLO.
The "Health Behavior and Promotion" course emphasized designing interventions based on behavioral theories, which directly addressed the outcome related to health education strategies. "Health Policy and Management" explored the legislative processes and policy development, fulfilling the goal of understanding health systems and policy-making.
Addressing Outcomes in Discussions and Assignments
Throughout the program, I actively participated in discussions and completed assignments that focused on real-world applications of public health principles. For instance, in a discussion on infectious disease outbreaks, I applied epidemiological methods to analyze transmission dynamics, fulfilling the epidemiology PLO. In a policy analysis assignment, I examined local health policies, which addressed the health policy PLO and enhanced my understanding of health governance.
Assignments such as developing a community health intervention plan allowed me to synthesize multiple PLOs—including program planning, cultural competence, and communication skills—demonstrating integrated learning. These discussions and projects provided practical insights into how public health theories and methods are applied to improve population health.
Most Meaningful Outcomes and Personal Reflection
Among the various learning outcomes, the most meaningful to me has been understanding health disparities and developing culturally competent practices. Engaging in discussions on social determinants of health challenged my perspectives and highlighted the importance of equity in health care delivery.
