In preparation for your Cultural Diversity Research Paper (the research paper is not due until Week 5), research your topic of interest, find appropriate resources, list them on an Annotated Bibliography, and submit this Week 3, following the directions below: • Select a culture you wish to learn more about. You will each conduct an in-depth study of a different culture, focusing on issues about living in the United States, both through an Early Childhood and family perspective. Try to immerse yourself within a culture that you do not already know much about, but have a need or desire to learn about; perhaps the culture represents someone in your classroom or school. Learn a bit about many aspects of the culture (traditions, language, etiquette, etc.), but especially attend to the contemporary issues the culture faces while living in our country today. • Use three to five peer-reviewed academic quality sources. You will likely need to look at more than three sources so that you can narrow down to your best sources. These sources will need to be pre-approved by Instructor). • Submit an Annotated Bibliography Week 3 for three to five academic quality sources for pre-approval by Instructor for use with your paper. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations for various books, articles, and other sources on a topic. The annotated bibliography looks like a Reference page but includes an annotation after each source cited. An annotation is a short summary (50-150 words) and/or critical evaluation of a source. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. • Your Annotated Bibliography must be APA formatted. Format: The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to the References page of an APA paper with the addition of the descriptive paragraphs. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double space your entries, and alphabetize each entry. Hanging indents are required for citations. On the line after the citation, indent two additional spaces and write the annotation. Remember to add an APA formatted title page. For annotated bibliographies, use standard APA format for the citations, then add a brief entry, including: 2 to 4 sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the source. What are the main arguments? The aim of this research project is to explore a specific culture with a focus on the experiences of living in the United States, particularly from an early childhood and family perspective. To achieve this, I selected the Hmong American community, a culturally rich group with significant representation in various U.S. regions, yet often underrepresented or misunderstood in mainstream discourse.

My initial research involved reviewing peer-reviewed sources that provide insights into the cultural traditions, language, social practices, and contemporary challenges faced by Hmong Americans. Three key sources stood out for their scholarly rigor and relevance: first, a comprehensive ethnographic study by Lee (2019) detailing traditional Hmong customs and their evolution within American society; second, an article by Chen and Vang (2020) analyzing the educational experiences and language preservation issues among Hmong youth; third, a governmental report by the U.S. Census Bureau (2022) presenting demographic data and highlighting social and economic challenges faced by Hmong populations.

The ethnographic study by Lee (2019) offers a thorough account of Hmong cultural practices, such as clan systems, traditional festivals, and kinship roles. It contextualizes how these customs adapt when Hmong families integrate into American society, often balancing traditional values with the need for acculturation. While the report is objective and data-driven, it highlights significant challenges such as poverty rates and access to healthcare, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive social services. Reflecting on these sources, my understanding of the Hmong community has deepened considerably. The ethnographic insights deepen appreciation of cultural resilience, while the educational and demographic data reveal ongoing struggles and areas for support. These sources will inform my paper by illustrating how cultural traditions persist and evolve amid societal integration challenges. They underscore the importance of culturally responsive education and social support systems for enhancing well-being and retention of cultural identity among Hmong Americans.
