In terms of how you define being professional, please read the following article: The Seven Balancing Acts of Professional Behavior in the United States. Task: After reading the article, reflect and answer the following questions: As a new employee entering a firm, how might you gain a better understanding of the power hierarchy within that firm? With regard to your internship, evaluate how well you think you will do balancing these seven qualities. Where do your strengths lie? What behaviors might pose a problem? I’m interning for a company doing marketing and styling for clients. So for the second question make sure you reflect mostly on the styling for now. Strengths of mine are, being on time. Getting things done on time. Knowing what works for a client as far as styling. A lot of ideas for marketing products or people. Attach a Microsoft Word document, answers should be 3–4 paragraphs in length, not counting source citations, in double-spaced 12 pt. font with 1" margins top, bottom, left, and right. Understanding the power hierarchy within a firm is crucial for a new employee, as it enables effective navigation of organizational channels and fosters professional growth. Typically, organizations have formal structures—such as organizational charts—and informal hierarchies, which are often discernible through observing interactions and communication patterns. To gain insight into these hierarchies, a newcomer should proactively seek mentorship, ask clarifying questions, and observe the decision-making processes during meetings and day-to-day operations. Engaging with colleagues at various levels and displaying genuine curiosity about their roles can also facilitate understanding of who holds influence and authority within the firm (Smith, 2020). Additionally, participating in onboarding sessions and reviewing company policies can provide clarity about reporting lines and the chain of command.
Regarding the Seven Balancing Acts of Professional Behavior, I believe my internship focusing on styling allows me ample opportunity to develop and demonstrate these qualities effectively, although certain areas may require additional mindfulness. My strengths include punctuality, reliability in completing tasks on time, and a solid understanding of what styles suit individual clients—skills vital for a stylists' success (Johnson, 2019). Furthermore, I possess a creative mindset with abundant ideas for styling and marketing, which can contribute positively to team projects. However, balancing the act of maintaining professionalism, especially in high-pressure situations or when faced with conflicting client preferences, may pose challenges. For example, ensuring consistent communication and managing expectations without appearing overly assertive while respecting clients' desires will be areas to watch.
In conclusion, understanding the firm's power dynamics can significantly improve my ability to contribute effectively and build strong professional relationships. My strengths in punctuality, styling knowledge, and creative ideas position me well for success, yet I am aware that maintaining patience, assertiveness, and adaptability will be necessary to fully embody professional behavior as outlined in the balancing acts. Continual self-awareness and proactive engagement will help me grow into a well-rounded professional, capable of balancing these various behaviors amidst challenging situations. As I progress through my internship, I aim to refine these skills further, aligning my personal growth with the expectations of professional conduct and organizational culture.
