My name is Mauricio, and I am an Emergency Room (ER) nurse who frequently assumes charge nurse responsibilities. In my role, I am constantly faced with complex ethical and legal issues that require careful decision-making to ensure patient safety, uphold professional standards, and adhere to legal requirements. As a nursing leader, I recognize that my decisions have significant moral and legal implications that influence not only individual patient outcomes but also the broader organizational environment.
The role of a nursing leader in ethical decision-making entails balancing the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. In the ER setting, these principles often come into conflict, especially during high-stakes situations where rapid decisions are essential.
