The objective of this assignment is to introduce you to academic writing (ASA or APA) and to help you to make a clear and logical presentation. The assignment will test your ability to analyze a specific sociological topic in the course material, write up your findings in academic format (APA or ASA), find and include academic references in your written work, and prepare a group presentation.
The writing requirement for this course is ASA or APA. Students are encouraged to use available resources such as in-person tutoring (Room G126 or A1212), phone extension 4282, email, online writing labs, Turnitin, personal tutors, and Write Away services to improve their work.
In TASK 1, group members select a unique sociological topic of interest within an assigned chapter. No two group members can choose the same topic. In TASK 2, students use textbook material to deepen their understanding of the chosen topic. TASK 3 requires students to use the textbook and three additional scholarly sources to write a 2-page (1000-word) paper presenting their topic. Each group member is responsible for their own paper and must submit an individual assignment. Additionally, TASK 4 involves creating a references page in APA or ASA format listing all used sources, which must be attached at the back of the paper.
The group is responsible for a 15-minute presentation on their selected topic (TASK 5). The paper must include a cover sheet with the title, your name, and student number; the 2-page paper; the references page; and a self-evaluation form attached at the back of the submission.
Failure to submit the paper on the scheduled date, attend the presentation, or complete any component will result in a zero grade for the assignment, with additional penalties for non-compliance.

In this paper, I will analyze a sociological topic of interest within the course material, demonstrating my ability to synthesize academic sources, utilize proper APA referencing, and present a clear, logical argument.
The chosen topic for this assignment is "The Impact of Social Media on Adolescent Development." Social media has transformed communication, social interaction, and identity formation, especially among adolescents (Kuss & Griffiths, 2017). As youth spend increasing amounts of time on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, concerns about its effects on mental health, social skills, and self-esteem have grown (Twenge & Campbell, 2018).
Research indicates that social media influences adolescent development in multifaceted ways. On one hand, it provides opportunities for social connection, peer support, and self-expression. On the other hand, excessive use has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and cyberbullying (Odgers & Robb, 2020). According to a study by Keles, McCrae, and Grealish (2020), the relationship between social media use and mental health issues is complex, influenced by individual differences and usage patterns.
Academic research suggests that the effects are mediated by factors such as social comparison, sleep disruption, and online harassment. For instance, sedentary behavior associated with social media use correlates with poorer psychological well-being (Vollmer, Maimon, & Hilbert, 2019). However, positive aspects include enhanced social capital, increased peer interactions, and opportunities for marginalized youth to find supportive communities (Livingstone & Sefton-Green, 2016).
To analyze this phenomenon, I reviewed scholarly articles, such as Kuss and Griffiths (2017), who explore addiction-like behaviors associated with social media. Their findings suggest that problematic use shares similarities with behavioral addictions, characterized by compulsive engagement and withdrawal symptoms. This is supported by the DSM-5's recognition of internet gaming disorder, which parallels compulsive social media use (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Furthermore, I examined studies on developmental psychology indicating that adolescence is a critical period for identity development and social learning. The widespread use of social media can influence self-concept through feedback loops and social comparisons (Nesi & Prinstein, 2015). It can foster positive self-expression but also amplify insecurities and social anxiety in vulnerable youth.
In conclusion, social media significantly impacts adolescent development, with both positive and negative consequences. It offers avenues for growth and connection, yet also poses risks that require awareness and moderation. Educators, parents, and policymakers should promote digital literacy programs to help youth navigate online environments safely and responsibly.
