BIO 170: Fundamentals of Nutrition Module 4 Homework Assignment PART I: LAB ACTIVITY Directions: This homework assignment will be written in the form of a lab report. The lab report consists of the following sections: introduction, materials/methods, data, results, conclusion, and references. The lab report must be at least two pages in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman, and 12-point font. Below are the various sections.
Please structure your lab report so that it includes these sections.
Introduction
The introduction mainly consists of three components, background information, objective/purpose of the lab, and hypothesis. Each component should have a paragraph dedicated to it (total of three paragraphs). Background information: Research needs to be conducted on what the topic is about. Objective/purpose of the lab: You need to clearly define why you are conducting the lab. Hypothesis statement: You need to create a hypothesis statement and reasoning for it prior to the start of the lab.
Materials/Methods
The materials section lists everything that is needed to complete the experiment. Please include all material that you used. The methods section describes all the steps that were taken during the experiment. This section should be written in your own words and not take directly from the lab.
Data
The data section relays all the data of the lab. They can be presented in charts, tables, etc. The data must be easily read. If there are numerical values, please ensure the correct unit of measurement is displayed as well.
Results
The results section explains what the data means.
Conclusion
The conclusion helps sum up and gives meaning to the results. The hypothesis should be restated and confirmed if it was correct or incorrect. Any explanation of why should be given. This explanation of “why” is the driving force of the conclusion. Reference back to your Introduction to help explain data and results. The conclusion should be at least two paragraphs in length.
References
A reference section is needed. There should be a total of two references. If you have a reference in this section, it should also have an in-text citation in the lab as well. References can be obtained by using LIRN. Please visit the Academic Resource Center (ARC) for helpful APA format, LIRN, and citation information.
Task/Lab
You will write a lab report for the following task. Determine your anthropometric measurements and body composition. Anthropometric measurements are used to find a body’s dimensions of bone, muscle, and fat tissue. These measurements can be used to determine a person’s body composition and whether the person is underweight, at a healthy weight, or overweight.
In this experiment, you will take various measurements of an adult volunteer and determine the Body Mass Index, Body Fat Percentage, and Waist-Hip Ratio. You will also form a hypothesis regarding your data. For example, do the anthropometric measurements of your test subject show a healthy or unhealthy weight and body composition? Note: If you do not have a volunteer to do this experiment with, you may use yourself as a test subject. Follow these steps: Use the following: AccuMeasure MyoTape MT05 and AM-3000 Fitness 3000 Personal Body Fat Tester Kit Scale or knowledge of weight Table 8-4, Adult Body Mass Index Chart, Page 177 Appendix A, Body Mass Index: Obesity Values, Page 576 (if needed) Calculator. Describe all the steps that you plan to take during the experiment.
Ask your volunteer for his or her height and weight. Use Table 8-4 to find the volunteer’s BMI. Document this result. Use the tape measure provided to measure the volunteer’s waist and hip circumferences. Document these measurements. (View Figure 8-6 on page 178 for clarification on the location of these measurements.) Calculate the waist-hip ratio by dividing the waist circumference in inches by the hip circumference in inches. Document the result. Use the Accu-Measure Personal Body Fat Tester and follow the included instructions to find your body fat percentage. Make sure to locate the right suprailiac before beginning and to take the measurement while standing. After taking the first reading, take a second measurement in the same location. If the second reading is more than 1mm apart from the first, repeat the exercise until you attain a more consistent result. Make sure to set the slide on the caliper all the way to the right before taking each measurement. Use the appropriate chart (male or female) on the back on the instruction card to determine your body fat percentage. Document the result. Record the results of this experiment. In your conclusion, explain in detail what occurred and if your hypothesis was correct or incorrect and why.
Identify ways, if necessary, to improve your overall physical well-being. What lifestyle changes could you make to achieve a more healthy weight or to maintain your current healthy weight? Save and submit your lab report.
PART II: CASE STUDIES
Directions: Read the case studies below. Then answer the questions. Please ensure that your responses are at least 4 to 6 sentences in length. Please cite any resources referenced using APA format. Please visit the Academic Resource Center for APA format and citation help.
Case Study #1
Ben is really good at losing weight. Four different times, he has lost between 10 and 30 lbs! He usually maintains the weight loss for a few weeks or months, but then something happens – the holidays hit, or he gets too busy to exercise, or he has something difficult happen in his personal life, that makes him start gaining weight again. He figures this really is not a problem – he knows he can start dieting and lose the weight again once he gets motivated again.
- Is it a problem for Ben to keep losing and regaining weight? If so, why?
- What would you recommend to Ben?
Case Study #2
At 14, Gina is alarmed by how her body is changing. She has always been bigger than most of her friends, but she seems to have gained a lot of weight around her abdomen in the past year. At her last medical examination, her doctor commented that she should try to lose weight. Her parents both work, so most days she is home alone for a couple of hours after school. Her neighborhood is not very safe, so she usually stays indoors and does homework or chats with friends online. She usually snacks on granola bars, pretzels, and soda while she waits for her parents to come home and cook dinner. Gina is thinking that she would like to lose a significant amount of weight before she starts high school in 5 months.
- What would you tell Gina about her desire to lose weight before starting high school.
- What types of changes would you recommend to Gina?
