This case exemplifies how institutional mission statements can both guide and be challenged by ethical issues arising within college sports.
University of Michigan’s Mission and Vision Statements
The University of Michigan’s mission statement emphasizes the university’s dedication to organic research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and nurturing a diverse community dedicated to social transformation through education (University of Michigan, 2023). It describes the mission as “to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving, and applying knowledge, art, and academic values.” The university’s core values include integrity, respect, and a commitment to the highest standards of scholarship and research.
The athletic department’s mission aligns with promoting sportsmanship, excellence, and integrity while fostering athlete development and community engagement. However, disparities can arise in how resources are allocated or in the emphasis placed on competitive success versus academic integrity. For example, the lucrative nature of college athletics can sometimes overshadow the core mission of education. Disparities are often seen in issues like excessive coaching salaries or facility spending, which may compete with funds allocated for academic purposes and research (Kelley & Wendling, 2020). When resources are disproportionately directed toward athletic success, the alignment with the broader mission can be compromised, risking perception of prioritizing entertainment over education.
Ethical Issue: Commercialization and its Impact
One prevalent ethical issue in college sports is commercialization, especially regarding the lucrative signing of endorsement deals and the commercialization of college athletes. While revenue generation can support athletic programs and scholarships, excessive commercialization may conflict with the university’s core values of integrity and education. For instance, overemphasizing athletic profitability can lead to compromised academic standards or exploitation of student-athletes.
Commercialization can threaten the university’s mission by shifting the focus from student-athlete education and character development toward profit-making. It may also distort the role of athletics within the university, transforming it into a commercial enterprise rather than an avenue for personal growth and societal contribution. Societal pressures to produce winning teams often steer institutions towards unethical practices, such as recruiting violations or neglecting academic standards, thus risking the university’s integrity and reputation (Lynch et al., 2019).
Additionally, commercialization may create disparities among student-athletes, favoring those in high-revenue sports at the expense of academic success or equitable treatment for all athletes. This misalignment not only undermines the university's values but also risks eroding public trust and the perceived legitimacy of college sports programs.

The alignment between the university’s mission and the athletic department’s mission is vital for preserving institutional integrity and fulfilling core values.
