Intercultural Communication Advice And Generative AI Applica

Intercultural Communication Advice And Generative Ai Applications1

Create a 5–7-minute video that analyzes advice from a generative AI application for an intercultural communication situation. Think of a communication scenario and a goal for achieving positive outcomes in that communication scenario with someone from a different country/culture (e.g., I have a student from Nigeria who is having difficulty enjoying the class because of my teaching style, so I want to make the class more enjoyable). It would be helpful to connect it somehow with your major, future career, personal relationship goals, travel goals, etc. Explain the scenario/goal in your video that you submit.

Create a prompt to put into a generative AI application (e.g., Chat GPT) to help you learn how to achieve a positive outcome that aligns with your communication goal (e.g., communication advice for me to communicate more effectively with the Nigerian student). Make sure to require the generative AI application to use communication scholarship to support the advice (at least 3 sources).

In a video, share the generative AI’s output/response and then reflect on the following prompts:

  • What do you think and feel about the advice that was given?
  • Explore the resources the AI application gave. Are they helpful? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Find a resource on your own without help from the AI application. How would you compare this one with the ones generated by Chat GPT?
  • What would you change about your original prompt you put into AI application to change the output from the AI? Why?

Rough outline for the video

  1. Give a preview of the video’s main points.
  2. Talk about the scenario/goals for communication.
  3. Share your input into the AI and its output along with your rationale for the input.
  4. Share your response to the advice/resources given.
  5. Compare AI resource/advice to your own resource you found and explain how you would adapt a new input into the AI application.
  6. Summarize takeaways from using AI for intercultural communication advice.

Upload to YouTube.com creating an unlisted video link to share with professor. (Cannot be private.) See the "Uploading A Video To YouTube Guide" course material for instructions. If you can submit video using another channel/means, you can do that as well. As long as the instructor can access it through the drop box, the video will be accepted.

Paper For Above instruction

Intercultural communication is essential in today’s interconnected world, especially as globalization increases interactions across diverse cultures. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT offers innovative ways to improve intercultural communication by providing tailored advice grounded in scholarly research. This paper explores a scenario involving an academic setting where a foreign student from Nigeria experiences difficulties adapting to a teaching style that does not initially resonate with them. The goal is to improve the student’s classroom experience through effective intercultural communication strategies facilitated by AI-generated advice, supported by relevant communication scholarship.

The chosen scenario involves a university professor aiming to enhance engagement and participation with a Nigerian student facing cultural and instructional style misalignments. The professor’s objective is to develop culturally sensitive communication approaches that foster inclusivity and academic success. To achieve this, a prompt was crafted for ChatGPT requesting communication strategies that are backed by scholarly research to meaningfully address cross-cultural misunderstandings and promote positive educational outcomes. The prompt specified the inclusion of at least three academic sources to ensure advice grounded in established intercultural communication theories.

The AI’s response offered several valuable insights, emphasizing cultural awareness, empathy, and active listening—all critical components of intercultural competence (Samovar et al., 2017). For example, the AI highlighted the importance of understanding the Nigerian cultural context, particularly communication styles that value indirectness, respect for authority, and community-oriented interactions (Adegbite & Akinwale, 2020). The AI suggested practical steps such as classroom adjustments, incorporating culturally relevant examples, and fostering open dialogue to build trust and mutual understanding.

Reflecting on the AI's advice, I found it insightful but somewhat generic. The recommendations aligned with core intercultural communication principles but lacked specific applications tailored to the classroom dynamics I observe. The scholarly sources provided—such as Ting-Toomey’s face negotiation theory (Ting-Toomey & Kurogi, 1998), Hall’s high-context and low-context communication framework (Hall, 1976), and the concept of cultural humility (Tervalon & Murray-García, 1998)—add depth and credibility to the advice. These sources clarify why certain strategies are effective and how cultural values influence communication styles, thereby reinforcing the importance of culturally responsive teaching.

To deepen my understanding, I independently researched “intercultural competence in education” and found an article by Chen and Starosta (2000), which emphasizes the importance of cultural consciousness and adaptable communication styles in fostering academic success among international students. Comparing this to the AI-generated advice, I found the article reinforced the significance of ongoing cultural education and the importance of institutional support systems. It also highlighted methods such as intercultural training sessions and reflective practices that I would incorporate into my teaching approaches, supplementing the AI’s suggestions with more proactive and structured interventions.

If I were to modify my AI prompt, I would specify the need for examples of specific communication techniques that can be employed during interactions, such as non-verbal cues or culturally appropriate feedback methods. I would also request the AI to include recent case studies or practical classroom scenarios to make the advice more actionable. The reason for this adjustment is to bridge the gap between theoretical principles and real-world application, ensuring that the generated recommendations are directly implementable and contextually relevant.

In summary, leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT for intercultural communication advice presents significant benefits by providing quick access to scholarly resources and culturally informed strategies. However, critical reflection and supplementary research remain essential to adapt and personalize the AI’s recommendations effectively. As intercultural interactions continue to expand, integrating AI-generated insights with human judgment and experiential knowledge can enhance intercultural competence, promoting inclusivity and understanding across diverse settings.
