Introducing the Coming Out Proud program (COPp) A program meant to reduce the stigma of mental illness Blythe A. Corrigan, Illinois Institute of Technology What is the Coming Out Proud program? • A 3 session group program run by pairs of trained leaders with lived experience of mental illness. • The Coming Out Proud program (COPp) includes: a user-friendly manual, step-by-step workbook, fidelity measure, leader training program. • COPp lessons include: considering the pros and cons of disclosing, different ways to disclose, telling your story. Why is a program like this important? • Self-stigma has harmful effects on people with mental illness, acting as a barrier to achieving life goals, causing low self-esteem, diminished self-efficacy, and the why try effect. • Research shows disclosing one’s experience may protect against self-stigma’s adverse effects. • People who disclose their experiences often report increased empowerment, self-esteem, and confidence. Considering the Pros and Cons of Disclosing Some pros and cons you might consider include the effects of disclosure, interpersonal relationships, and personal readiness. There are various ways to disclose, and this program guides individuals to make these decisions. How to tell your story If someone chooses to share their experiences, COPp provides guidelines for framing their story, focusing on empowerment and authenticity, and ensuring satisfaction with the exchange.
