It has been more than two years since I left China for pursuing qualified education in the United States. After graduating from Hangzhou Westlake High School, I was still a dependent boy stepping onto this land filled with unknowns. My experiences studying and living in Washington have transformed me into a thoroughly mature individual, making me eligible to be a student in the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the University of Washington, Bothell. Over the past several quarters, I have experienced a vastly different educational system in a new country. Initially, it was a novel experience to be exposed to this new environment.

Unlike others, I was highly active in this wonderful place in Washington to pursue my academic goals. During the first quarter, which is a preparatory phase for freshmen, I found the coursework manageable, thanks to my confidence in my academic abilities proven by my high school records. Fortunately, I dedicated time to explore interesting sites such as museums and scenic spots, which helped me earn an A and pass all my finals. At that moment, I felt proud of my academic and personal achievements, which, however, led to complacency in the second quarter. As my academic journey progressed, everything changed.

The coursework at Bellevue College became more challenging, leaving little time for personal interests. Worse still, I felt my intelligence was faltering because I could not concentrate on my studies for extended periods. Meanwhile, my classmates had improved significantly, making it harder for me to keep pace. Tragically, I received an F on my mid-term exam in Calculus, a subject entirely new to me. To make matters worse, I scored another F in English 093. This was a shocking wake-up call that prompted me to shift my focus back to academics. For the remainder of the quarter, I spent most of my time in the library, seeking help from professors and classmates whenever I faced difficulties. Eventually, I passed all my courses for that quarter, and I built solid friendships with my classmates, who saw me as a persevering individual.

Beyond academics, I developed the ability to balance study and personal interests during my last two years in Washington. As a student with transfer associate degrees in Arts and Science, Bellevue College's mission helped prepare me as a qualified college student ready to pursue further studies at the University of Washington, Bothell. Additionally, I regularly visited museums such as the Bellevue Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum to indulge my interest in cultural differences between China and the United States. Consequently, I am eager to join the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Science and major in Interdisciplinary Arts, aiming to expand my knowledge of American culture and gradually understand the reasons behind cultural differences.

The University of Washington, Bothell, is renowned for small class sizes, accessible instructors, innovative teaching methods, and research that combines theory and practice. These features will support my academic growth. After completing my undergraduate studies, I intend to pursue further research in understanding the cultural diversity between the United States and China.
