Lecture Assignment: The objective of this assignment is to get you into the HWC and participate in one or more of the fitness/recreational opportunities available there. Please follow the directions below…and have fun! During the next week attend a drop in fitness class or recreation opportunity offered by the HWC…maybe try a spinning class or show up for some Zumba…give climbing a try... or jump in the pool! The schedule and activity descriptions can be found on the WOU website or at the HWC. Former participation doesn’t count…either does current intramural participation.
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to engage with the health and wellness center (HWC) by participating in a recreational or fitness activity offered there. Students are instructed to attend a drop-in fitness class or recreational activity within a specified time frame, choosing from options such as spinning, Zumba, climbing, or swimming, based on the schedule listed on the university's website or at the HWC. Participation in previous activities or intramural sports does not qualify for this assignment. After attending the activity, students are required to write a reflection analyzing their experience. The reflection should discuss whether the experience was enjoyable, acceptable, or disappointing, and whether it motivates them to participate again in the future.

Engaging in campus recreational activities offers valuable opportunities for physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction. Recently, I decided to participate in a Zumba class at the Wellness and Recreation Center (HWC) to explore this popular form of exercise and evaluate its benefits and personal impact.
Initially, I was somewhat apprehensive, as I had limited experience with dance-based fitness classes. However, upon entering the classroom, I was greeted by an energetic instructor and a welcoming group of participants, which immediately set a positive atmosphere. The class began with warm-up routines that gradually increased in intensity, combining Latin rhythms with aerobic movements. The music was lively and motivating, which helped me maintain enthusiasm throughout the session.
Throughout the class, I appreciated the inclusive and encouraging environment. The instructor provided clear instructions and modifications, accommodating different fitness levels. Though some of the moves were challenging initially, I found that with practice, I was able to follow along more comfortably. The session lasted about an hour and provided a full-body workout, engaging the core, legs, and arms while also elevating my heart rate.
The experience was enjoyable overall. I appreciated the energetic vibe, physical activity, and opportunity to learn new dance moves. The combination of music and movement made exercise feel less like a chore and more like an enjoyable social activity. I left the class feeling energized and optimistic about maintaining a regular fitness routine involving dance or aerobics.
However, there were moments when I felt out of sync with some of the more complex choreography, indicating that I need more practice to improve my coordination. Despite that, this did not detract from my overall positive impression. I believe that frequent participation in such classes could help develop my confidence, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance.
In conclusion, attending the Zumba class was a rewarding experience that I would consider repeating. It provided a fun, effective workout and reminded me of the importance of incorporating diverse physical activities into my lifestyle. Moving forward, I plan to attend additional classes and possibly explore other recreational options at the HWC to enhance my physical and mental health.
