My aspiration as a future substance abuse counselor is to adopt specific therapeutic techniques that are evidence-based and patient-centered, ensuring optimal outcomes for clients. From the studies and teachings in this course, the treatment technique I intend to utilize most frequently is Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). This technique aligns with my belief in empowering clients, respecting their autonomy, and fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Its flexibility allows it to be tailored to individual needs and stages of change, making it highly effective for diverse client populations (Hettema, Steele, & Miller, 2005). The evidence supporting MI's effectiveness in reducing substance use and improving engagement in treatment underscores why I consider it indispensable in my future practice (Carroll & Rounsaville, 2006).
To continually improve my skills, I recognize the importance of expanding my knowledge in trauma-informed care, motivational strategies for diverse populations, and the integration of pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy.
