The engineer’s lack of knowledge regarding the historical and social complexities of racism signifies a failure to engage in genuine caring relationships, as they are unable to appreciate the contextual vulnerabilities of marginalized populations.
The ethical elements of care that the engineer fails to meet include empathy—understanding and sharing the feelings of Black patients affected by systemic discrimination—and attentiveness—being aware of social determinants and historical injustices that influence health outcomes. Without this understanding, the engineer may inadvertently design an AI that perpetuates or exacerbates racial disparities rather than alleviating them. For example, ignoring racial disparities in health histories can lead to the omission of critical variables that are essential for equitable assessment, thus neglecting the specific needs of marginalized communities.
This failure to incorporate a caring perspective highlights that ethical AI development requires more than technical accuracy; it demands an awareness of societal inequities and a commitment to fairness rooted in relational understanding. The engineer’s inability to comprehend or respect the racialized context of health inequality compromises the ethical element of respect, undermining the moral obligation to serve all individuals with fairness, compassion, and justice.
In sum, addressing bias in healthcare algorithms necessitates both rigorous technical safeguards—such as diverse training data, fairness-aware modeling, and comprehensive audits—and a morally grounded approach rooted in care ethics that emphasizes empathy, understanding, and social responsibility. Only through integrating these technical and ethical frameworks can AI systems be developed that promote health equity and social justice.
