Loss of Accent and Cultural Identity [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5] For this assignment, you will be creating a PowerPoint presentation. Prior to beginning work on this presentation, read the article Come Join Us and Lose your Accent: Accent Modification Courses as well as the article Hierarchization of International Students. Watch the video Kasia Suarez: Losing Sight of your Cultural Identity.
Millions of international students immigrate to the United States in pursuit of a quality education. They struggle to speak the language, learn the U.S. customs and traditions, and adapt and assimilate. While some may seek to integrate into the dominant culture, others may hide their accents and cultural identities.
In your presentation, discuss the factors associated with the need for accent reduction (AR) and accent modification (AM) courses that are available at various universities, colleges, and businesses. Identify the stereotypes associated with people with foreign accents. Describe how AR and AM courses might influence racial inequities and threaten cultural identity. Examine the reasons why immigrants choose to either adapt to the dominant culture or hide their accents and origins, and analyze the impact of these choices on their social and psychological well-being.
Finally, propose three solutions that can help immigrants embrace their accents and cultural identities. Your PowerPoint presentation must be 10 to 12 double-spaced slides (excluding the title and references slides) and follow APA Style formatting. It should include an introduction with a clear thesis statement, and a concluding paragraph. Use credible academic sources to support your points, including at least three sources beyond the course materials. Document all sources in APA format, and include a separate references slide.
This presentation should adopt an academic voice, and incorporate scholarly evidence to support your discussion on the loss of accent and cultural identity among immigrants, considering social, psychological, and cultural implications, as well as potential solutions.
