Management Leadership Module 2 Journal: ​Action Plan for ‘Model the Way’​ Guidelines and Rubric
For this journal entry, you will identify an aspect of personal leadership that currently has room for improvement, and practice actions to help you strengthen or develop in that area. You will reflect on this process in your journal entry. Review the Model the Way data summary in your SLPI 360 Individual Feedback Report, which your instructor will provide after your self-assessment and observer assessments from Module 1. Record your overall score from the Student Leadership Practices Inventory for Model the Way. Among the six leadership behaviors that are part of Model the Way, identify the statement that one of your observers indicated you engage in most frequently. If there is a tie, select the behavior that feels most accurate to you. Conversely, identify the behavior that your observers felt you engaged in least often, and if tied, choose the most accurate to you. Then, identify at least one action you can practice this week to bolster your least engaged behavior, reviewing suggestions from Chapters 1 & 2 of The Student Leadership Challenge. Finally, create and implement a plan to demonstrate your chosen values purposefully, with concrete behaviors that build credibility throughout the semester. Describe the plan in this journal, detailing actions taken and expected or observed outcomes.

Leadership development is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness and deliberate action. Reflecting on my recent feedback from the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI), specifically under the "Model the Way" domain, I recognized both strengths and areas for improvement. My overall score in this area was 6.8 out of 10, which indicates room for growth in embodying leadership behaviors that reinforce my values and set a positive example for others. The feedback revealed that I most frequently engage in "Clarifying my values" and "Setting the example," which aligns with my belief in leading by example. However, the area where I scored lowest was "Aligning actions with shared values," highlighting a gap between my values and my daily behaviors. This insight prompted me to focus on strengthening this aspect of my leadership to build greater credibility and trust with my peers.
To address this developmental need, I devised a targeted action plan. First, I will consciously demonstrate my core values in everyday interactions and decisions, ensuring my actions reflect the principles I espouse. For instance, if I value integrity, I will openly admit mistakes and uphold transparency. Second, I plan to seek feedback from peers regularly to monitor my progress and make adjustments. Finally, I will set specific behavioral goals, such as actively listening during team meetings and providing support aligned with my values, such as fairness and respect. By implementing these actions, I aim to foster a more authentic leadership presence that resonates with others and enhances my credibility over the semester. Reflecting on this process, I expect that aligning my behaviors with my shared values will not only improve my leadership effectiveness but also inspire others to do the same, creating a cohesive and value-driven environment that supports collaborative success.
