Many of you are concerned with the image others have of you. To alter people’s images, you might behave, act, and present yourself in a certain way. In other words, many people attempt to control the impression others form of them. This process is known as impression management. In this discussion post: v Explain a situation in which you engaged in impression management. Why? v Discuss whether you believe that you engage in impression management often. Impression management is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, involving the deliberate effort to influence how others perceive us. I recall a situation at a networking event where I consciously dressed professionally and maintained confident body language to create a positive impression. I was aware that first impressions could impact future opportunities, so I engaged in impression management to appear competent and approachable. I believe I engage in impression management moderately often, especially in professional settings, to foster trust and credibility. People I know often modify their behavior or presentation to fit social norms or desired images; for example, a colleague may act overly friendly to appear more likable or agreeable, demonstrating typical impression management tactics. This behavior helps them navigate social environments effectively, although sometimes it may lead to inauthentic interactions.

Regarding advertising, I analyzed a recent Nike advertisement promoting their latest running shoes (as seen on Nike’s official website). The ad highlights athletes racing confidently in the shoes, targeting active, health-conscious consumers. It appeals primarily to the affective component of attitudes by evoking feelings of empowerment and motivation. The visual imagery and energetic music aim to inspire viewers emotionally, creating a sense of achievement associated with the product. This strategy is effective because it connects emotionally with an audience seeking inspiration and self-improvement, aligning with Nike’s brand identity of athletic excellence and personal empowerment. The ad successfully targets consumers’ desire for motivation and identity expression through athletic pursuits.
