Growing up in Saudi Arabia, I was immersed in a culture deeply rooted in traditions, religion, and a hierarchical social structure. When I decided to study abroad in the United States, I encountered a vastly different environment that challenged and expanded my understanding of cultural, linguistic, and legal differences. My experience as an international student has profoundly influenced my worldview, teaching me valuable lessons about adaptability, cultural appreciation, and the importance of legal awareness.

One of the most significant aspects of my experience was learning a second language—English. Prior to my trip, I had studied English in school, but immersing myself in an English-speaking environment accelerated my language skills rapidly. I practiced daily with native speakers, which improved my conversational skills and boosted my confidence. Achieving a high IELTS score was a pivotal milestone, indicating my proficiency. This linguistic skill opened many doors for me, allowing better communication and integration into American society. It also enhanced my academic capabilities, enabling me to understand complex materials and participate actively in classroom discussions. This linguistic journey underscored the importance of language as a bridge between cultures, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Alongside language acquisition, I was introduced to diverse cultures within the United States. Traveling across different states, I noticed varying customs, traditions, and social norms. Such differences, though seemingly minor, revealed the regional variations that make American culture unique. My exposure to the legal and regulatory systems in the U.S. was equally enlightening. I learned that U.S. laws are created through democratic processes, such as voting, contrasting sharply with my homeland of Saudi Arabia, where laws are inherited and decreed from authority figures. For example, traffic signs in the U.S. are specific to each action—separate signs for turning left and going straight—whereas in Saudi Arabia, a single sign often guides multiple directions. Understanding these legal distinctions emphasized the significance of legal systems in structuring societal behavior and ensuring safety. It also highlighted the importance of citizens understanding and respecting local laws to avoid dangerous situations or misunderstandings.

This experience also taught me about the importance of cultural sensitivity. Encountering different social norms and manners required me to adapt quickly. For instance, American interactions tend to be more direct and individualistic compared to the collectivist and respectful approach in Saudi culture. Learning to navigate these differences improved my interpersonal skills and broadened my cultural empathy. It also made me more aware of my own cultural biases and taught me the value of open-mindedness.

Living in the U.S. also helped me understand the concept of independence and personal responsibility. Initially, I faced challenges adjusting to new laws, social norms, and academic expectations.
