My Academic Probation Experience As A Chinese Student

My “Academic Probation” experience as a Chinese student in the United States was deeply influenced by cultural differences and language barriers. Coming from China, the transition to studying and living in America was a challenging process, especially during my first semester at Michigan State University. I want to share a specific group activity in my math class that profoundly affected me and contributed to my academic probation. It was during this time that I felt overwhelmed and isolated due to cultural and linguistic differences. I was enrolled in a practice course for MTH124, held every Friday, where I was placed in a group with an American student and an Asian American student. During this group activity, we were tasked with solving a mathematical problem together. However, because of language barriers, I struggled to communicate my ideas effectively, and they did not respond to my questions, eventually ignoring me altogether. This made me feel less confident, and my confidence plummeted as I began to doubt my decision to study abroad. The negative feelings amplified, and I began to believe that studying in the United States might not be suitable for me. Consequently, I experienced academic difficulties and fell below the minimum GPA requirement of 2.0, leading to academic probation. I remember the day I met with my academic advisor to discuss my situation; it was snowing heavily, a phenomenon I had never experienced before in such abundance. The white snow made the environment feel stark and unfamiliar, and I felt a deep sense of isolation. During the meeting, however, my advisor offered reassurance and encouragement. She explained that many international students face similar challenges and that overcoming them is part of the adaptation process. Her words, “Everything will be okay, the worst is over,” stayed with me. She also emphasized that adjusting to different cultural norms and living standards is a gradual process, but it is achievable. This encounter marked a turning point in my journey, and I gained a new perspective about resilience and adaptation while navigating a new cultural environment. It was a reminder that difficulties and setbacks are temporary, and perseverance can lead to growth and success.
