Components of an Effective Plan

There are four components to consider when selecting how you will develop your new skills:

  1. Development Method: Identify how the skill will be developed. Common methods include:
  • Continuing education
  • Mentoring
  • Coaching (working with a supportive and skilled coach)
  • Success Measure: Determine observable results that indicate success, such as:
    • Expected results once skilled or knowledgeable
    • The reasons for achieving this goal and perceived benefits for yourself and others
  • Development Support: Recognize resources, feedback, tools, permissions, coaching, and assistance needed:
    • What do you need to support your goal?
    • Who do you need assistance from?
    • What are your concerns?
    • What barriers do you anticipate?
    • How can others help you overcome these barriers?
