This body system encompasses vital organs such as the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries, all of which work collaboratively to ensure proper circulation and oxygen delivery throughout the body. The cardiovascular system is essential for maintaining blood pressure, supporting organ function, and facilitating nutrient and waste exchange (Libby, 2021).
In relation to the cardiovascular system, several health conditions are highly relevant due to their direct or indirect impact on heart health and vascular integrity. Among these, hypertension (high blood pressure) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are paramount. Hypertension is a condition characterized by consistently elevated blood pressure levels, which can cause damage to arterial walls, leading to atherosclerosis—a buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in and on the artery walls (Whelton et al., 2018). This damage increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure, making hypertension a pivotal concern within cardiology. Similarly, coronary heart disease involves the narrowing or blockage of coronary arteries due to atherosclerosis, which can restrict blood flow to the myocardium, leading to angina or myocardial infarction (Benjamin et al., 2019).
Hypertension is relevant because it acts as a major risk factor for developing other cardiovascular diseases, including CHD. If unmanaged, it can lead to hypertensive heart disease, heart failure, and increased strain on the heart muscles (Whelton et al., 2018). The physiology behind hypertension involves increased resistance in the arteries, which forces the heart to generate higher pressures to circulate blood effectively. Chronic high blood pressure can induce hypertrophic changes in the heart and damage to the vascular endothelium (Libby, 2021).
Coronary heart disease is equally critical because it directly involves the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle. The pathophysiology typically involves atherosclerosis, plaque formation, and potential rupture, which can trigger thrombus formation leading to partial or complete occlusion of coronary arteries (Benjamin et al., 2019). This process results in ischemia, infarction, and subsequent heart failure if not promptly treated. Because of their direct impact on heart function, both hypertension and CHD are central to the practice of cardiology, highlighting their importance in risk assessment, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
