My time spent at a community college has enabled me to gain the knowledge and discipline I need to succeed in my upper-level courses at the university level. Within the small setting at my community college, I have been able to develop exceptional social skills by collaborating with my peers through study groups that I actively sought out for all my courses. Throughout my journey at a community college, I have acquired the skills and perseverance to seek help primarily from my instructors; I am no longer shy about asking questions in class or attending my professors’ office hours to ensure I have a clear understanding of the topics at hand. I have even established meaningful relationships with my professors, some of whom have become my mentors.
Most of the courses I have taken are very demanding and have required excellent time management skills to secure high marks. Many of these courses necessitated learning and mastering new disruptive technologies, which have empowered me to complete my tasks and projects more efficiently and promptly. Although my intended major is in the STEM field, I have also strived to complete the IGETC requirements, ensuring that I am not only STEM-savvy but also have substantial exposure to and understanding of arts and humanities, especially as they relate to science. Managing to take high-unit course loads that included multiple demanding disciplines has convinced me that I will thrive in the university’s challenging environment.
As a community college student, I have not only optimized my learning skills but also experienced what it is like to teach and mentor others. Serving as a teacher’s aide in the chemistry department has allowed me to tutor and assist students with their coursework, and this mentorship experience has been incredibly beneficial to me both personally and academically. A university education should provide me with the next step to further develop these skills, preparing me for a career in STEM.
