Virtualization Trends

Virtualization remains a foundational element of modern network architectures, enabling flexible resource allocation, scalability, and cost efficiencies. Over the past three years, trends indicate a shift towards containerization alongside traditional virtual machine (VM) virtualization. Container technologies like Docker and Kubernetes have revolutionized application deployment, offering lightweight, portable, and scalable environments. The trend towards Kubernetes adoption has surged due to its orchestration capabilities, simplifying management of containerized applications across hybrid and multi-cloud setups. Google Trends highlights a consistent increase in searches for "Kubernetes" over the last three years, reflecting its growing dominance (Figure 3).

In parallel, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has gained importance for replacing dedicated hardware appliances with virtualized network functions, reducing capital expenditure and operational complexity. The trend emphasizes virtualizing core network services—such as routing, switching, and firewall functionalities—which can be dynamically instantiated and managed remotely. The increased adoption of NFV aligns with the broader shift towards software-defined infrastructure, supporting agile and scalable network operations.

Wireless Technologies Trends

Wireless networking has experienced rapid advancements, especially with the rollout and adoption of Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and the ongoing development of Wi-Fi 7 standards. The primary trend in wireless is toward higher speeds, lower latency, and better support for dense environments, such as urban centers and enterprise campuses.
