Part I – Critical Review assignment outline

The Critical Review Paper is worth 100 points. Select any artwork from any culture or period at the DMA—either two- or three-dimensional. Write a critical review following this structure:

Description Paragraph

Introduce your chosen artwork, including the title in italics, artist name or 'anonymous' if unknown, creation date, medium, size, and museum name. Provide a detailed visual description to create a mental image. Analyze visual elements such as line, shape, light, color, texture, space, and implied motion, along with principles of design like unity, variety, balance, emphasis, scale, and rhythm.

Analysis Paragraph

Analyze your work based on its cultural and historical context, covering the history, values, religion, social structure, and politics of the artist’s era or movement. Discuss innovations and ideas expressed during that period, including new mediums or techniques and how the artist expresses themselves uniquely. Use research (not Wikipedia) to deepen your interpretation.

Interpretation Paragraph

Share your personal reaction and interpretation of the artwork. Explain what you believe the piece means, its narrative or social issues, and your emotional response. Discuss its relevance or message in a broader cultural or social context.

Proof of Attendance Photo

Include a selfie standing in front of your selected artwork, without a flash, to serve as proof of attendance. This photo does not count toward the paper length.
