Nursing Practicum Presentation Tammy Amerson-Wilson 590B April 25, 2016 Pamela Card Practicum Goal Evidence-based educational program on assessing spiritual needs of clients for the Wesley Nurses. Through a series of literature reviews, needs assessment, and research, the goal of this scholarly product is to provide the Wesley Nurse the knowledge, confidence, and techniques in order to assess and address the spiritual needs of the patients in the community. The development of an assessment tool and educational program for the nurses and to utilize during the orientation of new hires.

Causes Confidence Knowledge Meeting the patients’ spiritual needs is a significant area in healthcare in the contemporary world. However, it has been found that most nurses are unaware of what spiritual care entails and are not confident while practicing this area (Pappas-Rogich and Michalene, 2014). The education program teaches faith based community nurses on how to address and assess spiritual needs of clients. It is based on four major issues which are teaching the nurses on how to address the spiritual needs, instructing them on how to assess spiritual needs, empower them to implement spiritual care and equip them with techniques that are used to facilitate the patients’ spiritual wellbeing.

Solutions Identify barriers which prevent nurses addressing and assessing spiritual needs of patients Describe the various components and definitions of cultures, religion, and spirituality. List techniques nurses can utilize with their patients to promote spiritual well-being.

Project Development Learning Agreement- To gain insight into the role of nurse educator. To analyze, investigate, develop, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based educational program on assessing spiritual needs of clients for the Wesley Nurse Mentor- A mentor who knows what it takes to succeed and very supportive, even while on maternity leave. Belief the project would contribute to nursing practice at Methodist Healthcare Ministries The mission of MHM is "Serving Humanity to Honor God" by improving the physical, mental and spiritual health of those least served in the Rio Texas Conference area of The United Methodist Church. MHM is dedicated to providing medical, dental and health-related human services to low-income families and the uninsured throughout South Texas. It is now the largest private funding source for community healthcare services in South Texas. The mission also includes MHM's one-half ownership of the Methodist Healthcare System – the largest healthcare system in South Texas. This creates a unique avenue to ensure that the Methodist Healthcare System continues to be a benefit to the community by providing quality care to all and charitable care when needed, and it provides revenue to MHM for its programs (mhm.org, 2016).

Development Literature Review Learning Needs Assessment Tool Analysis Initially, a learning needs assessment needed to be completed. A literature review was undertaken and a questionnaire-type assessment tool was deemed to be the most appropriated for the project. After analyzing the interview results, an assessment tool was developed for the Wesley Nurses.

Development Literature Review Relevant Evidence-Based Practices Another literature review for strategies to build an evidence-based spiritual program and tool relating to the spiritual needs of the patients in the community setting. This program is aimed at increasing the nurses’ knowledge of spiritual needs of the patients. It aims to address the lack of spiritual care and train the nurses to assess the patients’ needs and how to address them. The development of the project required determination of the learning needs to help in understanding its concept. A research on evidence-based practices (EBP) related to addressing the spiritual needs of patients done to determine the possible challenges during the practicum.

Assessment Tool Spiritual assessment is the process by which health care providers can identify a patient's spiritual needs pertaining to their mental health care. One believes that in order to assess someone’s spirituality, we as healthcare professionals need to be aware and comfortable with our own spirituality. This gives us the opportunity to care for our patients needs and develop a positive relationship with them. A spiritual assessment is an important first step and a valuable part of the healthcare process, as it incorporates consideration of a patient’s spirituality into medical practice. This entails important lessons on how nurses can be compassionate to the patients without judging their religious beliefs. Nurses are taught to develop a primary understanding of the spiritual needs and preferences that are held by the patients to pave the way for the delivery of respectful care (Lemmer, 2012).

The indicators of spiritual fitness (another tool provided to the nurses). There is a huge difference between people who are spiritually fit and those who are spiritually sick. From spiritually fit to spiritually drained the level of spirituality differs from person to person. In case of the spiritually drained there remains no purpose of life or meaning. Spiritually sick people suffer from emotional stress which could lead to depression. The depression can be mild to severe based upon their spirituality (Ruder, 2013).

Implementation Nurses are taught that a clear understanding of the patients’ spiritual needs can be achieved from building a rapport during conversations and meetings. Faith based community nurses can do this by encouraging patients to recall their achievements and the positive experiences that they have been through (Ramezan et al. 2014). The implementation of the plan is based on the use of the training material to effectively train these nurses a measuring or assessing the spiritual needs of their patients. Most important thing is that the training program makes the nurses’ able to understand their patients’ needs and addressing them efficiently. It helps them understand how to communicate with the patients and establish rapport. These two are the most critical aspects of training that the nurses need to better treat their patients.

Facilitation Faith based community nurses are taught about techniques such as meditation and yoga that have been observed to promote healing, plus other techniques provided in the presentation for their use to address spiritual needs. It is important for them to accept that prayer is a coping mechanism that is adopted by patients from major religions and they should encourage it. The education program teaches that the body can be healed through the mind which relates to the spiritual wellbeing of the patients (Clark et al. Evaluation Tool Results from evaluation tool which developed for the educational program. Accepting and being open minded to diverse beliefs expressed by clients within our nursing practice. The importance of addressing spirituality needs more often with patients. Stress management education and approaches to it in faith based community nursing.

Stress management education and approaches to it in faith based community nursing. The evaluation of the tool showed that participants became more open-minded regarding diverse beliefs, emphasized the significance of addressing spiritual needs, and recognized the role of stress management strategies in holistic patient care.

Reflection Experience Value Career Reflection is an important part of any project. Because one brings one’s own physical being, emotions, strengths and weaknesses into each encounter with others, journaling can help one understand their reactions and motivations. By journaling, it allowed me to think critically about what was working and what wasn’t. I realized that although it was an arduous journey, it was also a learning experience for me. The importance of time management was something that came through in my reflections often. However, the tools that I acquired, such as following a timeline and completing tasks in order, are of great value to me. They are also tools that I can use in developing more programs to train and orient new nurses in my current career. They will be valuable in advancing my career.

More Reflection Next step with this project is to continue to remind nurses to use the tools provided to assist with assessment, to address, and utilize the techniques with their patients. Staff especially my friends, expressed that they are proud of me for pursing my MSN. Staff expressed that my Power Point presentation was very helpful and informative for the nurses and to utilize in the orientation process. Staff stated they like the way slides were presented and it was interesting from the beginning to the end of the presentation with useful information and discussion. Staff expressed appreciation of the assessment tool and spiritual fitness handout.

Professional Relationships Nurse-Mentor Nurse-Spiritual Liaison Nurse-Director Nurse-Peers Several relationships were forged during the project’s development and include the one between myself and my mentor. Strong mentoring-type relationships were also built between the nurses learning the material and myself as the instructor. The nurses feel that they have someone they can rely on and call if they have questions or concerns. A stronger relationship between myself, director, and spiritual liaison was found since I was working to improve the care of our patients as well as the knowledge base and confidence level of our nurses.

Conclusion The discussion gives a detailed evaluation of an education program that can be used to instruct faith based community nurses on spirituality. The program can be used in different contexts and the faith based community nurses can be taught using the PowerPoint until they are able to complete the FCN (faith community nursing) course, which is one year after employment. The orientation process of new hires will benefit from the educational program in the organization. The ultimate goal of the program is to help nurses deliver better healthcare by understanding the patients’ spirituality needs.
