Do your research on the organization and the person you will interview well before your meeting. Learn as much as possible from the organization’s website, news sources, and the Shapiro Library. Preparing questions before the interview will keep you focused on information that is not publicly available. Use the questions below when you conduct your interview. Write additional questions about the unique characteristics of the organization and the interviewee.

Ideally, the person you interview works for the organization that you have chosen for your final project. If so, the information you gather from the interview will help you with your strategic analysis of that organization. Use the answers to these questions and your additional questions to complete the short paper in Module Six.

Questions to research in advance:

For my upcoming interview, scheduled on December 15, 2023, at 10:00 AM via videoconference, I have prepared to gather comprehensive information about the organization, Second Chance Outreach, to support my final project and strategic analysis. Preliminary research on the organization’s website, recent news articles, and reports from the Shapiro Library has provided valuable insights into its mission, operational scope, and community engagement strategies.

Second Chance Outreach's mission is to empower at-risk youth through educational programs and community services, aiming to foster sustainable development and positive life choices. The organization predominantly serves underserved youth aged 12-18 in urban neighborhoods, providing mentoring, after-school programs, and life skills workshops. The organization’s board of directors comprises local community leaders, educators, and former beneficiaries, reflecting a diverse and dedicated governance structure.

From my research, I know that the organization communicates internally through regular staff meetings, email updates, and an internal newsletter that emphasizes ongoing goals, achievements, and upcoming initiatives. Externally, Second Chance Outreach utilizes its website, social media platforms, newsletters, and community events to share its mission, success stories, and opportunities for involvement, including fundraising and volunteer recruitment.

The organization’s fundraising strategies include annual fundraising campaigns, grant applications, and corporate sponsorships. Additionally, they organize community events such as charity runs and benefit concerts to engage donors and raise awareness. Volunteer recruitment is targeted through local schools, churches, and community centers, emphasizing the importance of hands-on involvement and community support.

Currently, Second Chance Outreach appears committed to maintaining and strengthening its existing programs, focusing on expanding its reach within the current service area rather than geographic expansion. Their long-term goals include increasing the number of youth served annually, developing new education initiatives, and fostering sustainable funding streams to ensure program continuity and growth.

During the interview, I plan to ask the interviewee about their specific responsibilities within the organization, their perceptions of the organization’s most pressing challenges, and their personal motivation for working in this sector. Additionally, I will inquire about their views on future organizational growth, partnership opportunities, and how they measure success in their role.

This interview will provide critical qualitative insights into operational realities, leadership perspectives, and strategic priorities, directly informing my final project’s analysis and recommendations. I will ensure the interviewee signs the consent form prior to the meeting, and I will adapt my questions based on their responses to gather in-depth, relevant information tailored to my project goals.
