ANNABEL LEE BY EDGAR ALLAN POE Edgar Allan Poe wrote Annabel Lee's poem in 1849, and it is still indistinct whom the poem was established. In the poem, the narrator speaks concerning how he and Annabel Lee fell in love when they were very youthful, their attachment being begrudged actually by celestial being who grabbed her away from him (Nugrahanti, 2014). Actually, after her demise, his adoration for her is even more intense, and he never likes their hearts to be disconnected.
The thesis that I acquired from the poem is the obsession with love. The speaker is unable to move on as he becomes obsessed, and in some cases haunted, by the idea of being left behind by Annabel. Throughout my paper, I assert that as much as the speaker adored his late fiancée, he was also tormented by her. Not that addiction is an absolutely negative something, only that when he lost her, it carried a toll on his senses. Love is absolutely the main theme of "Annabel Lee." Although it is a little perverted in areas, this is a poem about love.
At its basis, it is concerning a man who loves a lady, and declines to stop loving her. The primary issue regarding this theme is that the poem does not base to the bright side of love. It explains intense into the harmful parts of these feelings, the way affection can lure you, obsess you, and leave you unhappy and isolated (Syafitri & Marlinton, 2018). Love has developed this man who he is, but it's also precise that it has damaged his life. Their love was so powerful that nothing could ever come between them.
The speaker points out that when he says “And not the angels in heaven above, nor the fiends down under the ocean, can ever separate my heart of the enchantress Annabel Lee.†This meant that he is repeatedly obsessed by the love of his life. The final four lines of the poem are with no doubt the most disturbing, and it illustrates the speaker insanity and obsession. Authentic love is so defiant to human character that its existence can attest the remarkable ability. As John Piper said, when we love, we assume of nothing less than to be treasured back, and in the circumstances like this, we incline to be obsessed. By referring to a kingdom by the sea, I assume it is the orator's way of forming a land of fiction that is conforming to his fiancée and him, a site where it is all concerning the two of them and their affection blossoms (Nugrahanti, 2014).
He even argues that her only reasoning was to love and be loved by him. It is insane. Those last lines in the first verse might simultaneously make clear obsession and irreversible love. He uses this hyperbole to explain how much they could not get sufficient of each other. They fell in love while in their youthful ages, and he asserts that the celestial beings above desired for a love like theirs; a love unperceived to others, even the celestial.
I am prone to reason he is tending to give us first preview of their out-of-this-world affection that he explains as more than affection. Edgar Poe uses imagery in his poem to illustrate his distinctive nature and focus of attention. The portrayal of the kingdom is the major significant imagery Allan Poe utilizes to describe the circumstance of their affection as it was before demise interfered (Syafitri & Marlinton, 2018). The imagery is utilized by Poe couple times but usually in the term 'a kingdom by the sea.' Precisely reasoning regarding the definition of the term is essential for learners in forming the poem's tone. The imagery of the kingdom gives the entire poem a holistic thing, a kind of enchanted feeling.
The imagery utilized demonstrates suspense when studying the poem and leaves readers with all kinds of imagination. The character Annabel Lee is displayed out as imagery in the poem. She is the one the narrator speaks about her story in the poem. Annabel is the poem's purpose, as her enchantress and early stages are the treacliest of the poem. The narrator develops the memory of her demise by talking about the wind that caused her illness (Nugrahanti, 2014).
The imagery of Annabel is powerful in the poem as learners can envision her soft body as she passes away. In the last sad lines, Poe repeatedly talks about the enchantress Annabel, and her name becomes a resounding. Her trait in the previous stanza resonates like the narrator is striving to reawaken her. The symbol in the entire poem is the sea. It comes up repeatedly in verse and is the image that ties everything together.
The sea in this poem is probably huge, lonely, and cold. It is an excellent reflection of the narrator's emptiness and desolation now that he has lost Annabel (Syafitri & Marlinton, 2018). The first time the speaker uses the sea is part of the 'kingdom by the sea' refrain. If the kingdom becomes a symbol of the power of individuals, then the sea is all about the power of nature. It is neat how Poe can tie human beings and the natural world together in one term.
In the beginning, this poem may seem like it will be a fairy tale with the happiest ending. The narrator rapidly paints a picture of two young adults so madly in love that even the angels in Heaven become jealous. However, the story rapidly turns south when the young lady suddenly passes away unpredictably. This devastates the narrator and drives him insane. The incident of her death drives him so crazy, and he spends every night sleeping with her corpse in the tomb.
