Overview In This Course The Journal Will Be Used For Reflection In M

In this course, the journal will be used for reflection in Module Four. Occasionally, the United States Supreme Court makes decisions that are considered groundbreaking (abortion, gay marriage, death penalty, civil rights). In turn, these court decisions can affect public policies. These changes are often the result of the changes in public opinion that stem from them. Often, the response of policy actors, such as the media and local governmental agencies, to the court decision plays a role in these policy changes.

For this journal, you will research and locate at least one United States Supreme Court case that you believe influenced state or federal decisions or actions about your selected public policy issue that in turn will influence your departmental policy. The Module Four resource U.S. Case Law Opinions offers a sampling of recent and historic Supreme Court cases to choose from. You may also choose one from your own research. Refer also to the Criminal Justice Library Tips for assistance in finding and citing outside sources.

Be sure to apply what you have learned in this journal task to your final project. Prompt: In a minimum of 400 words, address the following in your journal assignment: ï‚· Provide the name of the case and the court’s holding in the case. ï‚· Explain how you believe the court’s decision played a role in policy changes. ï‚· Support your journal assignment using specific details regarding the decision of the case. ï‚· Describe how you will apply what you have learned to your final project.

Paper For Above instruction

The landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) serves as a seminal example of judicial influence on public policy, notably in the realm of civil rights and marriage equality. The Court's decision held that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by the Fourteenth Amendment, effectively legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. This ruling not only affirmed the civil rights of LGBTQ+ individuals but also set off significant policy changes across various state legislatures and government agencies.

The Court's holding in Obergefell v. Hodges fundamentally altered the landscape of marriage laws in the United States. Prior to this ruling, individual states had discretion to define and regulate marriage, leading to a patchwork of laws with some states recognizing same-sex marriages while others banned them. By declaring such bans unconstitutional, the Court mandated all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize such marriages performed elsewhere. This decision prompted a series of policy shifts at state and local levels, including the repeal of discriminatory statutes, the adaptation of health and welfare policies, and changes in benefits administration for same-sex married couples.

The Court's decision played a pivotal role in shaping public policy by aligning law with evolving public opinion on LGBTQ+ rights. The ruling acted as a catalyst that accelerated legislative and administrative reforms, fostering greater acceptance and inclusion of same-sex couples in societal institutions. Beyond legal implications, Obergefell v. Hodges influenced public discourse and policy debates, leading many states to review and revise existing policies on marriage, adoption, and anti-discrimination measures.

Applying this understanding to my final project, I will analyze how judicial decisions such as Obergefell shape departmental policies, especially in areas related to civil rights and social equity. Recognizing the influence of Supreme Court rulings will enable me to consider legal precedents when developing policies that align with constitutional protections and current societal values. By examining specific case decisions and their policy impacts, I can better predict and advocate for policies that promote fairness, inclusion, and compliance with judicial mandates in my field of work.
