Through the study and experiential practice of interpersonal communication, presentational speaking and group dynamics, students will understand the concepts and principles of communication and be able to use them effectively.
This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments. 3 Credits Prerequisites and Co-requisites: None Course Competencies: Competency 1: a. differentiating among communication models. b. identifying ethical issues in communication. c. recognizing different types and functions of communication. d. explaining the impact of perception on communication. e. identifying characteristics of a competent communicator. The course SPC 1017 – Fundamentals of Speech Communication is designed to develop students’ oral communication skills essential for various settings. This course emphasizes understanding and applying communication theories, organizing meaningful ideas, practicing effective listening, adapting language to situational contexts, and mastering auditory and visual delivery components. The course aims to prepare students for personal, professional, and educational success through experiential learning, including speeches, group discussions, and interpersonal interactions.
My decision to enroll in this course was driven by a keen interest in improving my speaking skills and overcoming public speaking anxiety. Recognizing the importance of effective communication in both personal and professional spheres, I sought to gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge that would enhance my confidence and competence in delivering speeches and engaging with diverse audiences.
Throughout the course, we explored vital concepts such as communication models, ethical considerations, perception impact, and the characteristics of competent communicators. The theoretical foundations were complemented by practical applications like organizing speeches, utilizing supporting materials, research methods, and engaging in online classes that focused predominantly on speech presentations. The course flow involved clear instructions from the instructor, structured assignments, and opportunities for feedback and self-assessment, fostering an interactive and supportive learning environment.
The relevance of this course extends beyond academic success, reflecting real-life experiences where effective communication skills have proved invaluable. For instance, delivering a speech during class improved my ability to articulate ideas clearly and confidently in workplace meetings and social settings. The skills learned also helped me navigate conflicts and express emotions appropriately in personal relationships.
