For the culminating project of the semester, students are asked to develop an argumentative essay focusing on a current public issue that has significant social relevance. The task involves selecting one of two pre-identified topics: the value of a college education or racial profiling. The essay should articulate a clear, focused thesis that addresses a specific aspect of the chosen issue. The paper must defend this thesis by presenting well-supported reasons, incorporating research, expert testimony, statistics, and personal observations, and demonstrating critical engagement beyond personal experience.

The student must use credible sources, correctly cite them in MLA format, and create a Works Cited page. The final 4-page minimum essay must be submitted via Turnitin and in hard copy during the designated class session. The student also must orally present the main thesis and supporting arguments during the final exam period, speaking for three minutes in front of the class. Failure to participate in the oral presentation results in a failing grade for the final exam.

Topics for potential focus include the broad implications of the value of college education—such as its economic benefits, relevance in today’s job market, and the purpose of higher education—or the issue of racial profiling—covering its definitions, affected groups, contexts, societal impacts, and debates related to security versus civil rights concerns.

The essay should not be a general discussion but a precise argument that develops a single, compelling thesis on some aspect of the chosen issue. The student is encouraged to explore personal connections, current debates, and research findings to create a comprehensive and persuasive argument. The paper must demonstrate analytical depth, clarity, and adherence to academic writing standards, including MLA citations and a cohesive structure.
