Introduction
The selected inspiration piece is "The Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh, created in 1889 in France. This iconic painting captures a swirling night sky over a quiet village, renowned for its expressive use of color and dynamic brushwork. Van Gogh’s background as a post-impressionist painter struggling with mental health issues adds depth to the emotional intensity of this work.
Inspiration Piece

Title: The Starry Night
Artist: Vincent van Gogh
Year: 1889
Place of Origin: France
This painting was created during Van Gogh’s stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It reflects his fascination with the night sky and his emotional response to his environment. The painting was not a literal depiction but an expressive interpretation of the night, emphasizing swirling patterns and vibrant colors.
Your Art Piece

Title: Whirling Cosmos (working title)
Background: Inspired by the emotional energy and vivid blue and yellow palette of Van Gogh’s "The Starry Night," I created a mixed media piece combining watercolor and collage to evoke movement and depth. The piece depicts a dreamlike celestial scene with swirling clouds and stars, aiming to express feelings of wonder and turbulence.
Connection
Both pieces explore the theme of the night sky and emotional expression through dynamic, swirling forms and vibrant colors. While Van Gogh used oil paint on canvas, my work employs watercolor and collage, which impact the viewer’s experience by providing a lighter, more textured visual effect. The formal elements—such as line, color, and movement—are similar in their energy, but differ in their techniques and medium qualities.
The use of contrasting mediums demonstrates how different materials can evoke distinct emotional responses. Van Gogh’s thick impasto strokes communicate intensity, whereas my watercolor’s translucence offers a dreamlike atmosphere. Both works use swirling lines to depict movement, but my collage adds a tactile dimension that Van Gogh’s painting does not have.
Conclusion
This creative process deepened my understanding of how formal elements and mediums influence artistic expression. By interpreting Van Gogh’s expressive style with a different medium, I gained insight into how artistic choices can modify viewer perception while maintaining thematic continuity.
