To gain a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities, roles, and perceptions, I conducted an interview with a practicing Nurse Practitioner in a primary care setting. This paper presents a detailed account of the interview, highlighting the NP’s credentials, practice environment, responsibilities, and insights into the profession.

Comments or Suggestions Regarding NP Practice Role:

The NP emphasized that their role is integral to delivering holistic patient care, focusing on prevention, management of chronic diseases, and health education. They highlighted the importance of collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. They suggested that continued education and adaptation to new healthcare policies are vital for maintaining effective practice.

NP Credentials and Education:

The NP holds a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialization in Family Practice. They are currently enrolled in a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program with plans to graduate within the next year. The NP explained that pursuing a doctoral degree aligns with their career goals of enhancing clinical expertise and leadership roles. They expressed that a DNP provides advanced skills in healthcare policy, evidence-based practice, and systems leadership, which are essential for evolving healthcare landscapes.

Type of Practice Setting:

The NP practices in a community outpatient clinic serving a diverse patient population across various age ranges. The clinic is affiliated with a hospital system and provides primary care, urgent care, and preventative services.

Their responsibilities include performing comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing common illnesses, developing treatment plans, prescribing medications, and providing health education. They also handle patient follow-up, chronic disease management, and routine screening procedures.

The NP has been practicing for over five years. They have taken on leadership responsibilities such as coordinating quality improvement initiatives, participating in practice protocol development, and overseeing some administrative aspects like scheduling and billing procedures.
