The final project asks you to do an in-depth study of the ethical practices of an institution, organization, profession, business, or other entity that uses information technology to do one or more of the following things: collect, organize, store, analyze, use, and disseminate data/information. The focus should be on the ethical dimensions of these practices—including issues such as data privacy, intellectual property, information security, equitable access to information, information reliability, fair and just data usage, etc. Research for the project will include both scholarly background research on ethical information practices for the organization and specific research on the institution’s practices.
As part of the discovery of the institution’s practices, you will conduct an interview with at least one person from the organization. Based on the information found in the discovery phase of the project, you will carry out an ethical analysis of the organization’s information practices. Using the ethical theories and concepts discussed in the course, you will evaluate these practices from an ethical viewpoint. Based on this evaluation, you will make at least one concrete proposal for how the institution can improve its ethics. About 1500 words. Such concerns are compounded by the opaque nature of proprietary algorithms, which may perpetuate biases or unfairly generalize emotional responses across individuals (Noble, 2018).
From an ethical perspective, the use of automated tools to infer emotional states raises questions about individual autonomy and dignity. Relying solely on linguistic markers to assess emotionality could lead to stereotyping or inaccurate judgments, particularly if contextual factors are ignored (Lindqvist et al., 2018). The potential for these tools to influence decision-making—such as in hiring, mental health assessment, or law enforcement—exacerbates concerns about fairness and justice. The call for stricter laws reflects a consensus that regulatory measures are insufficient, and companies must adopt ethical standards voluntarily, guided by principles like justice, beneficence, and respect for persons. Implementing oversight mechanisms, such as ethical impact assessments and continuous bias audits, could mitigate risks associated with emotion-based data analysis (Mittelstadt et al., 2016).
To enhance ethical standards, EL and similar companies should develop transparent policies that inform users explicitly of how their data is used, including potential risks associated with transcription errors or misinterpretations. Incorporating user-centric design principles—such as allowing individuals to view, correct, or delete their data—aligns with GDPR and other data protection laws (Voigt & Von dem Bussche, 2017). Moreover, interdisciplinary collaboration among technologists, ethicists, and legal experts could foster the development of guidelines that respect individual rights while supporting innovation (Floridi, 2018).
In conclusion, the ethical challenges posed by EL’s data practices exemplify broader issues in AI and data analytics—namely, balancing technological advancement with respect for individual autonomy, privacy, and fairness. Addressing these concerns requires a combination of regulatory frameworks, transparent practices, and ongoing ethical reflection. By adopting these measures, EL can serve as a model for responsible innovation in computational linguistics and emotion analysis, ensuring that technological progress aligns with societal values and ethical principles (Binns, 2017).
