Personal Essay 1 Assignment # 1: “Personal Essay†Vladimir Miletic ENG 115-English Composition Professor Michael W. Anderson October 22, 2015 I will choose a topic related to the work. This text was inspirational for me for many reasons, in some cases because of personal experience, but also in general reasons. To do the job is something that each of us experiences a certain way. Many people are not aware of the advantages or disadvantage of work that they do, as some are not even aware that you are destined for a job or not.

The case that we have in this text shows that people are often unaware that they are good for some jobs and that they feel they cannot do certain jobs because they are not sufficiently qualified or not smart enough or capable of such tasks. Every person should proceed from the fact that I should try, and not to be afraid of attempts as well as failures. Prejudices that we all have been the biggest problem when it comes to our ability. An example of this story proves that prejudices are detrimental to our decision. I think that anyone ever heard of a successful people from the world of show business or the economy that had been rejected for some jobs or some roles, but that did not hamper to proceed further and reach the tops in their careers.

In my opinion, there are several reasons why people have certain prejudices. One of the main bias is the environment that surrounds us and that gives us certain suggestions and directions for how to think about, but many times it turns out that these suggestions are not always correct. Another reason in my opinion is the school system and our education that sets certain rules that are not always correct. Many people think that if you have not done certain education program that they cannot do certain jobs. People should first try to do a certain job and then to decide whether they would like further training for it or not.

The best example is the art. Many people think if you did not go to acting school or music school that they cannot be musician or actors. In this case related to the arts have so many examples, where the greatest artists in history, as well as today, were excellent artists without a diploma for that what they were doing. Today we also have many examples in the IT industry where there are great professionals who are not graduates, but they all create their work and intelligence with no proper education. My personal example is a bit different from the examples that we have in the text, but the point is similar.

Since my interest is also a music, I had a situation at the beginning when I started to play the guitar that most people thought that I will not be able to become a musician, and that's not a job that I'll be able to do. I must admit that I have hit such comments and in some cases forcing the abandonment of playing. Since I am by nature a very persistent I do not like to give up, except when I have to, or I see no reason for further efforts, I was persistent and continued to deal with playing the guitar. After several years of time and participating in several bands I have achieved an enviable level of playing and with the help of playing music, I traveled a lot of cities and also I met a lot of people.

Many are then changed their mind and advised me that I need to move on and then they told me that I play very well. Unlike the situation in this article, I am not waiting for someone to show up and tell me whether I'm good for something, but I've concluded, and I was very focused on that. The conclusion that can be drawn from my case, as well as from the case, which is given in the text is that we have to win our prejudices and focus on our knowledge and skills. I also want to emphasize that the support of others, as well as support the environment is very important, but it should not be too much to rely on support, but rather rely on their work and effort.

Schools often emphasize formal qualifications, creating an impression that only those with specific degrees or certifications are capable of certain jobs. However, as the essay illustrates through examples from art and IT industries, real expertise and skill can often be acquired through practice, self-education, and perseverance rather than formal schooling alone.

My personal experience exemplifies these concepts. When I first started playing the guitar, many doubted my abilities because I lacked professional training. Some even suggested that I should abandon my pursuit. Despite this, I remained persistent, motivated by a deep passion for music. Over several years, I dedicated myself to practicing, performing in bands, and traveling to different cities. This persistent effort allowed me to reach a competent level of playing, eventually earning recognition from others, including those who initially doubted me. This journey underscored the importance of perseverance and self-belief in overcoming prejudices.

Furthermore, success achieved through resilience fosters confidence and encourages others to pursue their passions, regardless of societal judgments. It highlights the need for individuals to focus on their skills, put in sustained effort, and avoid reliance solely on external validation or support. While encouragement from others can be motivating, ultimate success depends on personal dedication and work ethic.

In conclusion, overcoming prejudices and believing in one's capabilities are essential for personal and professional growth. Success is usually a result of consistent effort, perseverance, and self-confidence rather than innate talent or external approval. Individuals should be encouraged to challenge societal stereotypes, pursue their passions, and trust in their own potential. In doing so, they can achieve their goals and realize their true capabilities, transforming initial doubts into lifelong accomplishments.
