Please read the instructions below for your week as an agenda setter. Purpose: The weekly discussion board serves as an opportunity to delve into current events in the news with any type of relationship to American government/politics. These connections can be explicitly political (i.e., stories about legislation being considered, protest movements, or politicians themselves) or they can be more tangentially related (i.e., fallout after a tragedy, local controversies, or pop culture moments). The key is to demonstrate how some relationship to power is at the heart of the topic. The intent is to keep you engaged with current events and to understand how they interact with the political realm.
Task: On the week you have signed-up for as 'agenda setter' please complete the following: 1) select a news story from a reputable source within the past two weeks which meets the criteria for the assignment; 2) write a word editorial along with your article discussing where you see potential connections to American politics, your thoughts on the event, and how it connects to course readings & lectures; 3) include two to three questions you may have and/or to help stimulate discussion/responses from your colleagues; 4) post numbers 1-3 on the discussion board for the week you are assigned before Monday's class; 5) check the discussion board regularly during the week and reply to at least two comments from your colleagues (please feel free to engage well beyond this initial requirement); and 6) compose a word reflection (within two weeks after your article is submitted) which considers the strengths, the weaknesses, and your thoughts on how the discussion board assignment went. Criteria: Submissions are evaluated upon meeting the requirements above, effort, ability to stimulate conversation, and meeting the due date.
