Please review the instructions for the Final Research Paper in Week Five before you begin working on this assignment. This assignment is designed to help you begin working on your Final Research Paper by requiring you to choose the sources you are going to use and summarize their contents. It will also give your instructor a chance to provide you with feedback on your thesis statement and your topic. Your Final Research Paper will consist of two main parts.

Part I: To begin, select one aspect of your own culture from the following list. In your Final Research Paper, you will be describing this practice from an etic (or outsider’s) perspective, using the textbook and the article by Miner (1956) as a guide. Aspects of Culture (Choose One):

- Race

- Education

- Language

- Gender

- Childrearing

- Courtship and Marriage

- Rites of Passage

- Religion

- Politics

- Economics

For each aspect, refer to the relevant research section in the textbook for detailed information. Additionally, identify at least one reputable scholarly source to support your ideas. Possible sources include the United States Census Bureau, Gallup, and Pew Research Center, but other reliable statistics or scholarly articles are acceptable.

Part II: Now, choose one of this week’s required articles to describe an aspect of another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective. Once aware of your sources, complete the worksheet by summarizing each one in one to two paragraphs, highlighting the main points. Proper APA in-text citations and references are required. These summaries will help you develop your working thesis statement, outlining what you plan to analyze, discuss, or explore in your final paper.

You may include any additional scholarly sources found during your research, provided they are listed in APA format. While two sources are sufficient, additional references can strengthen your discussion.

Remember, sources should be accurately summarized and properly cited. If unsure how to do this, consult the Ashford Writing Center’s Guidelines for Summarizing Sources and APA citation guides.

The final paper is a two-part assignment: a description from both an etic and an emic perspective, accompanied by supporting sources, and culminating in a working thesis statement.

Late submissions are subject to penalties of up to 10% per day, with a maximum late period of three days. Submissions after 72 hours past the deadline may receive a grade of zero. Please review the grading rubric for specific evaluation criteria.

In Part II, you will examine a different culture’s practice—also from an insider’s viewpoint—using a provided required article to guide your understanding. Summarizing this source accurately helps clarify the main points related to the cultural aspect and enriches your overall discussion. These summaries also facilitate developing a tentative thesis statement that articulates your intended focus for the final paper—what you plan to analyze, interpret, or argue.

Throughout this process, proper APA citation and referencing are crucial for academic integrity. If additional scholarly articles are discovered, they should be included to bolster your analysis, provided they follow APA standards.

The assignment emphasizes scholarly accuracy, clarity, and depth, culminating in a well-structured paper that illustrates both external and internal cultural perspectives, supported by credible sources.
