Pls 101 Civil Liberties Assignment 1. Students will choose a Supreme Court case that relates to at least one amendment from the Bill of Rights from the following selection:
— Gitlow v. New York
— U.S. v. Miller
— Weeks v. U.S.
— DeJonge v. Oregon
— Tinker v. Des Moines
— Brandenburg v. Ohio
Each student will need to find two scholarly references to use for the research of their case and reference them in MLA format. Suitable sources include SCOTUS.gov, GMC Library, Oyez.org, Library of Congress, Princeton or Harvard Law Review.
Students will then complete an assignment answering the following questions, with all information in their own words. The assignment must be submitted via the Moodle link named "Civil Liberties Assignment" to receive a grade. The assignment includes creating a presentation with a minimum of 8 slides: one title slide, one reference slide, and six content slides. Speaker notes are required on the content slides.
The content slides should address:
— Which amendment the case relates to and why.
— The factors that led up to the case.
— The result of the case.
— The effect of the Supreme Court case on society.
— Whether you agree with the decision and why or why not.
— Possible alternatives to the decision.

The purpose of this research is to understand the case's connection to a particular amendment, the circumstances leading to it, the court’s decision, and its societal impact.
Additionally, students will prepare a comprehensive presentation comprising at least eight slides. The slides include a title slide, six informational slides with speaker notes, and a references slide. Each informational slide must answer specific questions: which amendment relates to the case and the reasoning behind it; what factors led to the case; the outcome of the case; how it affected society; whether the student agrees with the Court’s decision and why; and what alternative decisions could have been made.
This assignment aims to develop an understanding of constitutional rights, judicial reasoning, and the societal implications of Supreme Court decisions. Students should ensure the presentation is well-organized, with clear explanations and properly cited sources, demonstrating originality and understanding of the material.
