The journals in this course are private communications between you and the instructor. Approach your journals as an opportunity to reflect on and apply what you learn each week from the assigned readings, discussions, and activities. The journals are a chance to share your knowledge and expertise from your past educational and professional experiences. As a successful professional, you will need good reflection and writing skills. Journal assignments offer you the opportunity to further develop these skills.
Each journal assignment is graded individually. Overview: This course focuses on the business sector, commonly called charitable nonprofits. These organizations are classified under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS tax code. Do not use nonprofits categorized under other sections of the IRS tax code for your final project assignment. Charitable nonprofits:
- Are exempt from federal income taxes.
- Are allowed to accept tax-exempt contributions.
- Have limits to lobbying activities.
- Cannot use their funds to support candidates for public office.
You will study these organizations during this course. You will begin with the one you choose to use for your final project. You will look at all aspects of an organization as part of your strategic analysis for the final project. You will interview an employee, manager, or key volunteer (such as a board member). You might even suggest a plan for making the organization more successful.
You need to identify a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that you would like to study throughout the course to complete this journal assignment. Visit Candid.org (formerly Guidestar.org) for help in selecting a not-for-profit organization.
If you wish to research a local not-for-profit organization, use your browser to search for your city with the keywords not-for-profit, nonprofit, or volunteer opportunities. You should find several organizations to choose from. Review the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric to ensure there is enough information on the organization’s website to meet the project requirements. Verify that you have a way to interview an employee, manager, or key volunteer at the organization.
What to Submit
Submit your assignment as a Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. The journal assignment should be at least 250 words in length.

Paper For Above instruction
The selection of a non-profit organization for the final project in this course requires careful consideration and strategic analysis. For my chosen organization, I selected a local United Way chapter because of its prominent role in community development and its broad scope of services. This organization's reputation for impactful programs and its visibility within the community make it an ideal candidate for a detailed strategic review. I was particularly attracted to this non-profit because of its focus on addressing social inequalities through targeted initiatives, which aligns with my interests in social equity and community service.
Additionally, the United Way’s diverse operations and commitment to volunteerism present a rich tapestry for analysis. Understanding how the organization secures funding, manages stakeholder relationships, and evaluates its programs gives valuable insights into effective non-profit management. Its established presence in my community suggests that sufficient information is available online, including annual reports, financial statements, and program descriptions, all of which are essential for fulfilling project milestones.
I have identified a volunteer coordinator within the organization who has expressed willingness to participate in an interview. This will provide firsthand insights into organizational operations, strategic priorities, and challenges faced by the non-profit. Conducting this interview will deepen my understanding of the organization’s internal dynamics and help in developing actionable recommendations for its future success.
In summary, the United Way organization I selected is suitable for comprehensive analysis. Its transparent operations, community engagement, and relevance to current social issues make it an excellent candidate for the final project. The accessibility of sufficient resources and opportunity for direct engagement further bolster my confidence in conducting an effective strategic analysis that encompasses all required milestones.
