The process of developing effective public speaking skills is a continuous journey that involves self-assessment, reflection, and strategic planning. As I evaluate my growth at this mid-course point, I recognize several significant improvements alongside areas that still require attention. Additionally, reflecting on past experiences, personal preferences, and goals provides clarity and motivation for ongoing development in oral communication.
Firstly, I have observed tangible progress in my vocal clarity and confidence during presentations. Notably, I am now more comfortable maintaining eye contact with my audience, which helps establish a connection and convey sincerity. Practicing breathing techniques has also enhanced my voice projection, reducing mumbling and increasing audibility. Furthermore, I have learned to organize my thoughts more systematically, which has led to clearer and more structured delivery. These advancements indicate a growing awareness of the importance of voice modulation, body language, and organization—key components of effective communication (Jung & Lee, 2020).
Despite these gains, there remain several aspects of my public speaking skills that I wish to improve. For instance, I struggle with managing anxiety, especially in unfamiliar settings, which can cause me to rush my speech or forget critical points. I also need to develop better cues and transitions within my speeches to ensure my ideas flow smoothly. Additionally, I tend to rely heavily on notes, which can detract from audience engagement. Addressing these challenges will help me become a more confident and engaging speaker (McKeown, 2019).
Reflecting on my past experiences in the course, I realize that constructive feedback and practice have substantially influenced my oral communication. For example, receiving critiques on my eye contact and vocal variation prompted me to focus intentionally on these areas. The opportunities to rehearse in front of peers have also fostered a sense of accountability and provided valuable insights. These experiences have reinforced the importance of preparation and openness to critique, which are integral to improvement (Beebe & Beebe, 2017). Moreover, engaging with diverse topics has expanded my confidence and adaptability as a speaker.
My likes and dislikes regarding public speaking have evolved throughout the course. Initially, I found the idea of speaking in front of an audience intimidating and disliked the uncertainty of unpredictable reactions. However, as I gained experience, I started enjoying the process of crafting compelling narratives and connecting with my audience emotionally. My dislike for nervousness has decreased somewhat, but I recognize that managing anxiety remains a challenge. My experiences have reinforced the value of practice and positive mindset techniques in mitigating fear (Daly & Vangelisti, 2020).
Regarding personal goals, I set targets such as improving eye contact, reducing filler words, and increasing overall confidence. I believe I have made notable progress in these areas. For example, I now make a conscious effort to sustain eye contact throughout my speech, which has improved my credibility. I have also become more aware of filler words like "um" and "like," and I actively work to minimize them. However, I still need to work on maintaining composure and enthusiasm when presenting complex ideas. Continuing to record and review my presentations will help gauge further improvements and maintain accountability (Alden & Hieb, 2018).
To organize my reflections and plans, I developed an outline for my upcoming video blog. This outline incorporates my progress, challenges, and strategies for future improvement. It begins with an introduction summarizing my journey and intentions. The body discusses specific improvements, ongoing challenges, and influences of past experiences, supported by credible sources. I then elaborate on how my likes and dislikes have evolved and connect these to my goals. The conclusion reiterates my commitment to continual growth and concludes with a motivating statement to inspire perseverance.
In conclusion, self-assessment and structured planning are essential in refining public speaking skills. Recognizing progress such as increased confidence and vocal control provides motivation, while acknowledging ongoing challenges motivates targeted efforts. Reflecting on past experiences and continuously setting goals helps in sustaining motivation and tracking development. As I move forward, I intend to embrace more opportunities for practice, seek constructive feedback, and implement new techniques to enhance my oral communication capabilities. This iterative process of reflection and action is vital for becoming a more effective, confident, and engaging speaker (Lucas, 2019).
