Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 9 in your textbook, the required articles, Why the Opioid Epidemic May Have Fueled America’s Murder Spike and Opioid Epidemic So Dangerous, Says CDC, It’s Finally Killing More People Than Guns, and watch the video: Warning: This Drug May Kill You. The opioid crisis has become a controversial issue that is increasingly difficult to ignore. Substance abuse, particularly opioid addiction, is a significant risk factor for criminal behavior, and the crisis has prompted extensive debate among criminal psychologists, public health professionals, and communities. A key concern is the potential relationship between opioid abuse and rising homicide and violent crime rates.

In your discussion, conduct additional research on the opioid crisis using the University of Arizona Global Campus resources to stay informed of the latest developments in the national debate. Then, engage in a brief debate with your classmates based on your assigned perspective. Your instructor will assign you to one of two prompts:

Prompt 1: Physicians have caused the opioid crisis by over-prescribing highly addictive pain medications.

Prompt 2: The individuals taking opioids are responsible for their own behavior, and doctors should be able to prescribe whatever they deem medically necessary without limitations.

In your response, provide your insights into whether rising violent crime rates are a consequence of the opioid crisis, as suggested in your readings. Support your arguments with current research and data.
